Equipment used:

Carbon Ti handle with ++ on right side and + on left side
Arko soap and Mango shaving cream (forgot name)
New PLB blade
GFT Coral Skin food
Alum

I got delayed in shaving for longer than I wanted to and had at least a week's worth of scruff to shave off. Since I won't be able to test the + by itself with such growth I decided to dedicate the ++ to my right side and the + to my left side. The results were interesting. Both blades had some effort in taking down the amount of growth that I had, but have to say that they both performed very smoothly in doing so. I have experienced razors that pull and tug when trying to remove so much hair with several razors, but didn't have this problem at all.

In the first pass it seemed like the + baseplate was doing slightly better somehow, even though I could feel I was getting more removed at once with the ++ baseplate. I'm not quite sure what it was I was experiencing, but I was noticing something different. Nothing bad mind you, just different from what I am used to. The lightness of the entire razor is something that is a shock as I usually use stainless steel razors and am used to the weight. I kept trying to grab in the middle of the razor where there is no knurling at first, but overtime I became more accustomed to gripping closer to the top of the razor for a secure grip. It is just something different to get used to, but actually felt quite natural by the end of the shave.

My second pass was easier after having cleared so much stubble from the first round. With my second pass I could feel the increased efficiency of the ++ baseplate easier and found it quite pleasing with no problems. In fact the smoothness of going across the grain and even against the grain was very pleasing which is a compliment as I rarely go against the grain and across it sparingly. I was able to do this more easily than with most other razors. The + baseplate did a good job on the other size, but it just felt like it was doing nothing. The smoothness was there, but I could barely discern any cutting. Stranger still after applying my alum and GFT I would have to say that my left side feels like it was cut closer than my right side. I could feel on the second pass the increased efficiency and I believe more blade feel with the ++ baseplate, and had a few moments notably below my lower lip and at the base of my neck on my right side where the ++ baseplate was getting a bit too close for comfort, but again in another twist I had more razor burn from the left side.

Overall I can't say I have any complaints with my first shave. I'm going to have to see what the ++ and + feel like with less growth to contend with, and intrigued with the differences I experienced. One thing I forgot to mention earlier is that the Carbon razor has an excellent fit and tightens the razor down to a degree I'm not accustomed to. I had to use a wash cloth just to be able to grip the razor safely to change the baseplates during my shave. I believe this is part of the reason I noticed an increased smoothness that again I'm not accustomed to.

Equipment used:

Carbon Ti with carbon fiber handle with ++ on left side and + on right side
I Coloniali shaving cream (forgot name)
New Personna Lab Blue blade
GFT Coral Skin food
Alum
Polo 8

I used the same baseplates of ++ and + again, but I reversed them this time. The ++ got dedicated to the left side, and the + to the right side. I have to say I'm quite pleased with the results for both sides. Down at the base of my neck I had a few troublesome areas, and could feel one particular hair on the left side of my face that feels a bit perturbed at the moment, but I think it'll be just fine after some rest.

Normally I can't use the higher gap plates at such a short time between shaves, but it seems like these don't have much problem. Any problems I have are likely from just recently switching to my I Coloniali so I can use it up and I'm not fully accustomed to it yet. A bit of burning from the alum block on both sides down near the base of my neck, but quickly gone with the GFT. Again the smoothness of the razors was notable and excellent. It's such a difference going to a light weight razor. I do have two titanium razors, but the full titanium feels lighter than either my Henson Ti, or the Timeless Ti I have, and that difference becomes all the more pronounced going down to the carbon fiber handle. While I would prefer knurling in the middle, I can't say that it was a problem as the fingers work on finding an intuitive grip for me. It was interesting to note again that I feel like the + base plate was just slightly closer for me in this instance. I can say that I feel something that seems to click better for me when I use that one, but I'm not quite sure what that is. The angling of it seems to be better.

I got a bit delayed in using these as I nicked my upper lip while the razors were in transit and I had to wait a bit for the nick to heal. I want to get one use in with the two lower exposure base plates tomorrow, and then get it sent on hopefully Thursday morning.

The razor is on its way to draebeard now.

Equipment used:

Carbon Ti with titanium hand handle with original on right side and - on left side
La Toja Sensitive shaving cream
New Personna Lab Blue blade
GFT Coral Skin food
Alum
Paladin Atlas Vesuvius

Using the last two baseplates I have to say that all of the baseplates provide a smooth, comfortable shave. I would have to say they all provide good efficiency and you need to take a bit of time with them all as even the minus managed to produce a nick. That was my own fault due to a bit of sloppy technique. Less effort to get the stubble mowed down. I didn't have a chance to write about it right away as I usually do after shaving. I think any of the baseplates would be a great choice ultimately. I find that I usually prefer razors that are a bit less efficient and lower in blade exposure, but even if I shaved everyday I think I would lean towards the + baseplate. It's a rare razor that doesn't overdo it in terms of exposure and blade feel, and feels so refined. Everything I tried was excellent and worth the price I felt!

Thank you for the opportunity to try these! I'm going to have to keep Carbon in mind for a razor!

If the SS didn’t work out for you I highly recommend the Ti. I had both and the Ti was such a better shaver for me. Ti is my go to precision tool for carbon. I did not enjoy the SS as much.

Matt: I thought the Original .68 plate was nice and then I acquired the .88+....magic

I tried the .88 + plate in the passaround, but only a few times since the .68 just clicked with me. Hopefully he does an A+ Plate someday with the + plates gap and the .68 plates blade exposure

A couple quick notes for the thread. It hasn’t even been a full year since I first tried a Carbon razor. So far I have used four different base plate varieties and been lucky to experience some different stainless steel and titanium parts to a Carbon razor. The last couple months I got a titanium setup and have been using the ++ and - base plates the most. I can use these for daily shaving and have been switching back in forth and even over the weekend did a 2 pass and enjoyed doing that with the 0.68 original plate. The plan is to try out the + plate in titanium later this year and get some more shaves using all of the base plates.

Before buying a Carbon, I anticipated buying it to try and replace one of my favorite razors, the BBS-1. I didn’t know if I would find the Carbon to be what it is but I was hoping to like it enough to switch over and use that if I bought one. So after months and months of using different Carbon setups in my shaves for 2020 and 2021 so far, I decided to sell the BBS-1 after using it for hundreds of shaves over 6 or 7 years. It was nice while I had it but now I happy to shave with the Carbons and can enjoy the variety offered from these base plates. My skin seems happy so I think that is important.

Of course, one razor will not suit all people but for my preference

1 Most preferred so far is the “-“ minus base plate for daily shaves, great cut and soft on the skin

2 My first winner with Carbon was the “++” plus plus and I really do love this base plate, smooth on the skin, efficient on the beard, fun shaver

*important note-I tried the + plate maybe once during the passaround but don't own a + plate*

3 Great design and a definite keeper of a design, 0.68 base plate has a lot of beard picture since it offers blade exposure, I prefer not to use this one on my against the grain pass though,

Finishing up this week with a Gillette Rubie Platinum blade on it’s 6th shave so far. Not sure how much longer I can push it but will switch back to Kai after that. I think those are my favorite blade in this razor so far. I’d like to see what a Kai feels like if I can get it to 12 shaves.

What razors remain in the den? R41 (2013), RR aluminum and stainless steel DLC Lupo.

DFS, Thanks again for letting me be a part of the passaround last year. Cheers

The Carbon Razor package arrived today, and so did my Tibam handle from Russia.  So I decided to use them together.  Since I had a 4 day growth I chose to go with the + and ++ plates, one on each side of my face.  The ++ had a lot more blade feel, but the results were about equal.  I already have experience with the .68 plate, so I will get to that one last if at all.  The 80 mm Tibam handle is a great fit and gave me more control than the longer Carbon handles.  More comments after my next shave.

Second shave, with 2 days growth, and the - plate; a damn fine shave.  I was expecting to be disappointed, but was indeed quite pleased.  It has less blade feel than any of the others, but still retains good efficiency.  I was also pleased with the R-2 handle, which was surprisingly nimble and did not feel too long in my hand.  A notable improvement over the original "Poodle" handle, which I found ungainly.  My next shave will be with the + plate and the carbon fiber handle.  So far, all the plates have been to my liking.  I'll get to the original plate last, as I am already familiar with it, albeit in stainless steel.
