Carbon Shaving Co. Cx-316L & Ti DFS pass around

I also have a Blackland Blackbird, a Timeless SSSlim, and both the stainless and the copper Alpha Outlaw. Currently, my favorite razor is my Karve CuBr or with the SB-E plate. Like I mentioned earlier, I used their information on blade gap and exposure and started with the C plate. It seemed like it would've been in my wheelhouse, but I found it to be too mild. I look forward to seeing your thoughts and experiences with the + and ++ plates.

Nice lineup! I picked up a used brass Karve CB with C, D, and E plates. I've only used the C plate so far. And like you, I felt that it was milder than I prefer. I need to try out the D and E plates after my time with these Carbon razors is up. I'm planning to use the + plate tomorrow.

Thanks! That's just the tip of the iceberg really. I lost count after like 30. I I think I have the Blackbirds in every metal they've made so far. Yes, I really liked the E plate. Based on the info they provide I really thought the C would have worked for me, but it didn't. The E plate doesn't necessarily feel super aggressive, but the efficiency is outstanding. All I need is one pass under my nose and my mustache area and that's it. I don't even need to do the second one. I'm curious to see your experience with the plus plate tomorrow. Because I wasn't sure if I should just skip that one and get the ++ plate. I really could never decide.

Shave #2: Carbon Cx-316L with + plate

Today I loaded the stainless steel Carbon with the + plate and a new Astra SP. I had two days' worth of growth on my head and face. I liked the feel of this shave better than my last shave with the original plate. I felt like the blade feel and efficiency were more in sync / proportion than when I used the original plate. I mentioned that I didn't get a completely BBS shave on my head during my last shave, but I did get a BBS head shave today. The WTG pass on my face was great, but I got some irritation and weepers on the subsequent XTG and ATG passes. Hopefully future shaves will improve as I get accustomed to the razor, but these first two shaves haven't been as comfortable as the shaves I typically get with my usual rotation of DEs. 

Shave #3: Carbon Cx-316L/Web ++ vs. Carbon Cx-Atlas ++

Best Carbon shave yet! I planned to use the Cx-316L with the ++ plate this morning. Since the Cx-Atlas also came with a ++ plate, I decided to use both razors side by side. I loaded each with a brand new Personna lab blue. I shaved the right side of my head and face with the stainless steel razor and the left side with the titanium/carbon fiber one. 

The Cx-Atlas is a very impressive tool. I spent the first couple minutes of my shave just turning it around in my hands and marveling at how light it is. I was concerned that it might be too light for me (I haven't been a big fan of aluminum razors, but do like titanium and stainless steel), but that fear was unwarranted. 

This was definitely the most comfortable shave I've had with the Carbon razors so far. The end result on my head was identical on both sides - a BBS shave without nicks or irritation. On my face, both sides are similarly close, but the Cx-316L did give me a bit of irritation on my neck. The Cx-Atlas side was irritation-free. I'm really glad that I worked my way up to the ++ plate and tried a new blade. This was a very nice shave. 

Here's a quick few tips/rules for the pass around.  Please try to be mindful of the creator of the razor and everyone on the pass around list.  If you're going to be out of town just before or during your turn, just ask us to bump you down on the list so you can have the proper time to use it and so you also do not hold up others from trying the razor(s) in a timely manner.

As this pass around includes more than 1 razor, let's agree to keep it for 10-14 days before passing it on so people have adequate time to use and judge everything.

Also, please insure the razor for $1,000 just in case it gets lost in the mail..

I'm closing this pass around out after Oregon is done with their turn as this pass around has been going on for almost a year now.  from my understanding, CarbonShavingCo. is going to send around another razor kit in the near future.

that aside though, I'm probably going to apply some requirements for future pass arounds, like 3 or 6 months of membership to the site and at least 50-100 posts.

I am going to miss reading and seeing the great pictures!  Thanks to Andrew, Carbon Shaving and all who participated.

Shave #4: Carbon Cx-Atlas ++ vs. Yates 921-EH

On my previous shaves, I've been mentally comparing the Carbon razors to my current favorite DE, the Yates 921-EH. Today, I decided to actually compare them side-by-side. My best shave so far from the Carbon razors was with the Cx-Atlas ++, so I used that. Both razors were loaded with new Personna X-Series platinum coated blades.

On the first pass on my head (WTG), both razors felt smooth and knocked down two days' growth easily. On my second pass (ATG), I was able to shave faster with the Yates. The Carbon took me more time and more strokes to clean everything up. I own the Yates and have used it much, much more than the Carbon, so this wasn't a big surprise. The end result was pretty similar, but the Yates side was a bit closer. After I finished shaving my head, I switched sides and took a few strokes to see if either razor could pick up anything that the other left behind. The Yates did pick up some stubble that the Carbon missed. The Carbon seems to work better at a shallow angle (riding the cap), and I bet that the missed stubble was from me missing the angle.

On my face, again the razors both felt good WTG. On subsequent passes XTG and ATG, the Yates felt smoother and more comfortable to me. The Carbon felt less forgiving of different angles of attack. I was reminded of some comments that atxwatch made about blade clamping and chatter. For example:

For this razor to work for me, the clamp point would need to be much closer to the blade edge. That is really what is causing the issues for me. But that would be a totally different design. And there is no getting around that the CX is probably the most beautiful razor on the market right now.

Looking more closely at the razors, the blade sits fairly flat in the Carbon head. I don't know if that relative lack of curvature affects the rigidity of the blade. But that blade angle does seem to make the razor more sensitive to the angle of attack on my skin. It felt a bit rough if the angle was too steep. At the end of the face shave, the Yates side was slightly closer. 

With more time, I'm sure that I could get accustomed to the Carbon and get better shaves with it. And I know that it has worked well out of the box for a lot of people in this passaround. Both of these Carbon razors are amazing tools that are beautifully machined, and I'm very grateful that I've been able to test them.

A quick comment...while I am not in the pass-around anymore, I just received my CX razor yesterday and took it for a spin with the GSB blades that came with the razor. All I have to say is WOW. First of all, somehow this blade felt better than my usual go-to's and I went a bit shallower still than I did during the pass-around. The result might be one of my best shaves ever. I still think the shave itself could be better, but the final product is absurdly good. Over the next few days, I will try the other blades that came with the razor (AstraSP and Nacet).
