Carbon Shaving Co. Cx-316L & Ti DFS pass around

PostScript: The razor is on the way to Stickshift now and he'll have it on Wednesday. After using my usual suspects the last couple of days (Blutt + CG Everyday), I can confidently say that while I REALLY enjoyed the end result of the shaves with the CX, the shave itself just doesn't compare to the shaves I get with my other razors. I realize this is because of my particular skin and beard type, so no aspersions cast on CX in any way.

For this razor to work for me, the clamp point would need to be much closer to the blade edge. That is really what is causing the issues for me. But that would be a totally different design. And there is no getting around that the CX is probably the most beautiful razor on the market right now...I think it looks better than the Wolfman WR1 I had and shaves every so slightly better, as well.

It's been a privilege you all.

Unless it's too late, I'd be in. I have wanted one for some time and can't decide on the + or ++ plates. I have a copper handle, but have never tried their plates.

Here's a quick few tips/rules for the pass around.  Please try to be mindful of the creator of the razor and everyone on the pass around list.  If you're going to be out of town just before or during your turn, just ask us to bump you down on the list so you can have the proper time to use it and so you also do not hold up others from trying the razor(s) in a timely manner.

As this pass around includes more than 1 razor, let's agree to keep it for 10-14 days before passing it on so people have adequate time to use and judge everything.

Also, please insure the razor for $1,000 just in case it gets lost in the mail..

The razors got delivered this evening and look great. Thanks for sending them atxwatch! I'm planning to do a head and face shave tomorrow morning and will post my thoughts.

Thanks to CarbonShavingCo. and andrewjs18 for the opportunity to test these razors! They were delivered to me last night, and I had my first shave this morning. 

Shave #1 - Carbon Cx-316L - Original plate

Background: I shave my head and face usually every other day. I've been using DE and SE razors for about the past 16 months. I prefer efficient razors with some blade feel. My current favorite razor is the Yates 921-EH. Here are some others that are in my rotation: H&S Co. Ti Efficient, H&S Co. Ti P076, Alpha Outlaw, Blackland Blackbird, and Timeless Ti Slim. 

For my first shave, I went with the stainless steel razor and original plate loaded with a new Astra SP (my most used blade). The build quality and feel in the hand were excellent. I really like this handle and the overall balance of the razor. I shaved my head first, and the first pass (WTG) felt pretty smooth. Maybe I was struggling to maintain the angle on my next pass (ATG), but I felt like I had to shave over some spots multiple times and do quite a bit of clean up. (I do tend to prefer razors with a bigger blade gap and larger angle of attack.) At times, the razor felt a bit "bitey." I ended up with a nick on the back of my head, and I can feel that I didn't get a completely BBS shave everywhere. You can't see any stubble with the naked eye, but I can feel some with my hand. This could certainly be user error / lack of experience with this razor. 

I shaved my face next and felt like I was getting a bit more dialed in with the razor. Again, my first pass (WTG) was pretty smooth and comfortable. On the next two passes (XTG and ATG), I ended up with a couple very minor weepers and slight irritation.

Overall, I felt like the efficiency didn't quite match up to the level of blade feel. The razor doesn't feel overly aggressive, but I expected more efficiency given the amount of blade feel and perceived aggression. Again, this could be due to my lack of experience with the razor since this was my first shave with it (or my blade choice, lather, other variables). I plan to work my way up through the + and ++ plates next. I'm looking forward to seeing how the larger gap and smaller exposure affect things. 

Great to be here, I’m very active on social media on many of the shave groups and would love the opportunity once my profile becomes more established to test the Carbon razor pass around. Been considering that one for a while now.

I hate to say it, but I miss shaving with the CX-316...I might just break down and buy it despite the fact that the in-shave experience doesn't quite live up to other razors...maybe I'll sell another razor I don't use much for whatever reason...

Thanks for the review! All those plates are confusing for me. I also like efficient razors, and was never sure which one to go with. Like you said, the larger gap plates have less blade exposure, while the original has a little bit more. I have found blade gap and exposure to be a very confusing thing. I also have a Blackland Blackbird, a Timeless SSSlim, and both the stainless and the copper Alpha Outlaw. Currently, my favorite razor is my Karve CuBr or with the SB-E plate. Like I mentioned earlier, I used their information on blade gap and exposure and started with the C plate. It seemed like it would've been in my wheelhouse, but I found it to be too mild. I look forward to seeing your thoughts and experiences with the + and ++ plates.
