BST thread price-point suggestion

Freddy - I actually agree with what you say here. I was being a bit idealistic, to be honest.

I've been trying to work out other possible solutions, but they all seem to be unworkable. The options I came up with were:

1) Allow other users to comment on prices. We've all seen how this is unworkable and devolves into chaos quickly. So that's out.

2) Have every BST sale thread 'watermarked' with a warning that prices may not be representative or fair. This may be possible, but I don't know if it would help.

3) Allow no comments on BST threads. I think this may be the best option as it allows no comment whatsoever on the BST threads and eliminates the issue of people feeling the need to comment when they think someone is being underhand.  It also puts some pressure on the OP to price an item invitingly or have the thread get buried quickly with no option to bump it.  

It still doesn't take care of the issue of figuring out if the asking price was okay. I remember when I started out on B&B that I was pretty naive about vintage razor prices and it was only after getting burned a few times that I figured out how to research prices to make sure I wasn't overpaying. I wish there was a way to eliminate people using the forums to gouge others, but I think you've correctly pointed out the issues that arise when the forum tries to police these sales.

while not a bad suggestion, it would take a lot of moderation to make sure people are doing it.  for me personally, I can't be bothered with it.  in fact, having to find the price paid or what the item is going for before listing something for sale would deter me from listing an item altogether.  I think this might be the feeling for a lot of people, too.

it'd be easier for us just to lock the bst from comments other than those from the thread starter, in my opinion.

Guys, I am so of two minds on the idea of no comments.  On the one hand, yes that would simplify certain aspects, especially for us moderators.  However, what about a comment that actually adds to the thread?  For example, someone asking if the product for sale is the 201_ version or the 201_ version?  This could be helpful for a prospective buyer and an honest seller (which I believe is the vast majority of our members) would be happy to oblige.  Am I so wrong in my thinking?  As far as I am concerned, and where we stand now, Damn Fine Shave has it right.  Sometimes it can drive andrewjs18, Marko, Matsilainen, and me to distraction.  However, ultimately, I believe what we have is the best of all worlds.

I understand Freddy. I would only say that all legit questions could be addressed via PM's. The OP should then have the option to amend the original thread. i.e. adding clarifications. Small point, I concede---but eliminating the trolling of BST threads, IMO, is more important. No matter what Mods decide, I am sure it will be in the best interest of DFS.

Andrew, perhaps a bump feature could be added into the edit screen for the OP, then only they could bump the listing without needing an actual post to do it. (Just thinking out loud, as I don't know the first thing about writing code )

I don’t know if gentlemanly comments should be blocked from a thread.

I think I'm missing something. Is there really that many bad BST posts that a change is needed. I know what started this conversation and I agree that that thread got out of hand. But to me that doesn't seem to happen very often. I like the BST policy that's in place. I'm fairly new to forums in general. When I joined DFS I also joined several other shave forums. I was surprise and kind of put off by most of their BST rules when I read them. DFS's BST rules make sense to me. As a consumer you should always be making informed purchases. whether it is a BST post, Facebook, Ebay, or Target. I would never walk in to Sears and expect to be told how much they paid for the washer and dryer I was looking at. The same should be said about any form of classifieds you would look at. I think that's why I agree with this forums approach to it. When I see someone with an over the top price I just chuckle to myself and move on.

a plugin could definitely be made to achieve this, I just don't know if there's enough 'issues' to warrant such a thing.

great post. you are right, there's aren't too many "problems", just a few every now and then and they're almost always about the same thing: something is perceived to be priced too highly. Ironically, we don't get people complaining when something is listed for too low..

one of the reasons we keep the bst archives around and visible to all users is so people can help gauge the market and what something is selling for. we also have a bst rule that the pricing should remain intact for this very reason.

our theory on the forum is that we want to keep the forum rules simple. we truly believe that the more complex the rules become, the less likely they'll be read and followed at all.
