Well, I got my hands on a St John's sample (which the company has on its website) and I do like it.  It is definitely close the DR Harris -- perhaps a touch more clove-like and just a bit more aggressive, unlike the DRH which is almost  refined, or as you said, sophisticated.  However, the St John's unlike the DRH, lasts.  The DRH scent disappears almost immediately.  Today used it AND the DR Harris and was quite content.  Still experimenting though: have some PAA samples on their way
You will like the PAA bay rums - which ones did you get?
Went with:  Boomtown Bay Rum, Coconut Bay, and Atomic Age Bay Rum.  Didn't realize there were all that many more.  Will try them next week and respond. Thx.

That sounds great. To be fair, there is nothing wrong with Boomtown. It’s a great bay rum with a fair amount of leather in it. I’ll still wear it occasionally even though I’m not a leather fan. That PAA is like a mad scientist of bay rum.

If you haven’t seen it, CaD314 just posted the upcoming release of Space Nog on his merchant thread.

Space Nog is a legit bay rum. Strong too, the way bay rum should be.  This one should be in every bay rum lovers lineup.

Don't want to disappoint too many here but I did receive the PAA samples and gave them a good try over the last few days, and also compared them to the St John's and Harris.  Well, the PAA didn't win out. The Atomic Age was a nice scent, lighter, clean and more fruity (pineapple, I detected) than I expected -- perhaps the rum influence led it in a sweeter direction.  I, however, find the darker, more bay and clove aspects of the St. John's to be more to my liking.  While I could live with the PAA, the real problems with the PAA, particularly Atomic Age and to a lesser degree the Coconut Bay, were (1) that they made my face go alight; something in them does not agree with my fresh-shaven skin; and (2) even once my face died down, they had little sillage for me.  The scents barely lasted. Again, the St. Johns, as the comparison, was entirely different.  Within an hour later, there was very little Atomic Age or Boomtown (not to my taste, really) scent left; with Coconut Bay, I was left with coconut only.  Better than the DR Harris but not sufficiently long or to my liking, and, as I noted, I like the St Johns'  scent better, anyway, and it had decent sillage.  So, at least I tried.  But still lots of others to try, of course.  Thanks for the thoughts Marko.

Thanks Lesser  for your feedback on the bay rums. For sure Saint Johns is one of the best but there really is no (or at least very few) wrong answers here. It’s all about the bay rum that you like. It’s too bad that the PAA lit you up. You could try gradually inoculating yourself to them but only if you like them enough. Lots if bay rums are warming to my skin but none of them have actually lit  me up with a reaction. Have you tried the Ogalalla bay rum? It’s nice or at least I think so.

Saint John ms makes a nice balm as well.

Will be trying Ogalalla -- I see how well liked it is. I hadn't considered the balm from St John's; maybe I should have but the splash was pricey enough.

I mentioned the balm because you like Saint Johns and won't be spending your money on full size PAA by the sounds of it so, with all that extra money...St. Johns balm  Big Grin

I like Ogallala but just the straight up bay rum or double strength (better), they have several other bay rums like lime and peppercorns or sage and cedar which are al very nice in theri own right but despite being labeled as Bay Rum, Limes and Pepercorns or Bay Rum Sage and Cedar at least to my nose they are not bay rums.  If you want to try them out I recommend getting the Bonanza Pack that has the straight bay rum and several of the other scents as well.  You can make your own call on whether you detect any bay rum in the other scents.

If you want a bay rum that has a little more lasting power than the DRH, I have found the Captain's Choice to be a good smelling bay rum that lasts a good long time.

Here’s my PAA collection. For some reason Boomtown Bay Rum missed the class photo!! Big Grin A couple of them like Kiritimati and Samhain aren’t technically bay rum but are bay inspired.

Kiritimati is a fine scent. Wonderful at Xmas. Frankincense is underappreciated, but often the star of the show, IMO.

BTW, is it just me, or does Blue Samhain smell like the Bit-O-Honey candies?
