Posting Freak
Don't forget the AMAs - I don't know if other forums do them but the opportunity to ask a vendor or artisan anything for a whole day is pretty cool.

I wouldn't get too caught up in the analytics - sure they're a metric and will certainly show trends but they're not entirely accurate. Example - if I sign in to DFS and poke around for an hour then get distracted and leave without logging out and then come back 12 hours later, I'm still logged in and my usage time will be recorded as 13 hours online.

Whatever, I agree with BadDad on the matter of DFS - I haven't been active on other forums but I did check a few out. One in particular was a little disturbing - like I walked in on a public stoning of a particular artisan/vendor. I found it really unpleasant and didn't go back there again. Here is goodSmile

Quote:Michael P, thank you for starting this thread.  I checked out the $10,000 Wolfman auction when you first posted the link and got a good chuckle out of it.  I think most of us knew it was a joke.  As to the "seller's" latest post to the auction, I don't know, I feel like he said more by posting the original auction.  Whatever.

Anyway, it's good to have you here Michael!  You are an old MSer who is like a kid let loose in the candy shop with all of the "new" experiences you are having after being "forced" to use all of these different shaving soaps and things.  Your enthusiasm is contagious! Awesome!

Thanks, Rob. I suppose that's why I've been noticing these auctions: Since I've broadened my horizons, I've started using some of the gear in my den that I hadn't used in years, and also been on an acquisition tear, so I keep my eye on BST and auctions.

With MS, it was soap, oil, paste, all basically unscented. One type of DE razor. Great results, not much 'fun'.

So much has happened in these intervening years, so many wonderful artisans making software and hardware, I'm having a wonderful time, and can't tell you all how much I appreciate the civil nature of the discourse on DFS.

A mentor once told me that hobbies are expensive, both in terms of the money you invest in the hobby, and the time you devote to it, so be sure it's something you enjoy thoroughly.

There are some out there who see those of us 'enthusiastic' wet shavers as 'marks', as another rabid market, and they buy low and sell high. I don't begrudge them their profits, but I like to think that the 'old-fashioned' 'gentlemanly' spirit of wet shaving leads to a sense of sharing, and trading at fair prices.

Agree. But more telling are the analytics. I don't know what google analytics show but Alex public info is interesting. The "one" has dropped ~70% in the last 9 months in worldwide ranking. Time spent on site has dropped > 25%.

In the same time period DFS has DOUBLED its world wide rank and time on site is ~85% greater of another site, or put another way, the average user spends 185% as much time HERE as in other forum. So despite the closed society, an open society is MORE successful at keeping members interested in the site.

This is very interesting information. This is easy to find out. go to Alex. com and just enter the website of your choice.

Good job DFS!

I'm pretty happy with these stats:

in all seriousness, the goal of this forum is to discuss all aspects of shaving: products, techniques, meetups & etc.. restricting what can and cannot be posted with regards to shaving products, ebay auctions, videos, meetup calendars, product releases, etc., etc. runs afoul of those stated goals of the forum. another goal is to be the best shaving forum in the world, but isn't that what most people want to do when they do something?!

with those goals in mind, this also might be why DFS has, I believe, the largest amount of merchant interaction of any wet shaving forum in the world. we're proud of that!

edited to add: we're also always trying to improve the product (the forum) for our users. we're currently working on a product review system that should be pretty awesome.

The ego that allows him to sit in judgment of us all is sadly a common feature of the human condition.

As for me, I'm going up to have me one damn fine shave Happy2

I love the hobby, love being in the business and love spending hours discussing, watching videos, looking at sotds etc... But I'm whacked. Let us whacked people enjoy our freedoms😀

And, well done Andrew, I told you that you'd do well!

thanks, Joe.

we're always putting in work behind the scenes to improve the product. I'm sure you're well aware of how it all works with your own sites and companies.
