A flea market find this past weekend. A vintage 6 x 2 hard black Ark. It is in new or very low mileage condition.

From my adventures at the flea market, a Norton HM8. This is the wooden boxed version of a HB-8. It measures in at 7 15/16” x 1 15/16” x 1. A very nice two-tone stone changing from translucent to black translucent. This was an exciting find on a outstanding Ark

6X2X.75 and 8x2x1 inches.
This pair I have lapped and dressed for simple water use ,as such they polish steel like what they are, nearly pure abrasive in a handy rectangle.
No pressure is needed or wanted ,this is a switch from my normal method of honing on Arkansas stones with oil.cheers.[Image: 688620df07fbb1df56d248c81f232b78.jpg]

I have two Hard Black Arks and just added two more. The two I have are lapped, burnished and are outstanding finishers. The new ones will be lapped soon. I have a question. What are the characteristics to designate the difference between a translucent black and a surgical black? Is there a difference or are the two names interchangeable?

Just reviving an old thread.

This is a 6x2 combo Soft and Hard Ark that I recently picked up. I would like to try a full Ark progression on a razor.

This is my SB Ark.

Dan’s Primitive Cut! 7.5x3.5 for $65 shipped...lapped flat and has a straight edge on the back of this picture.  It is a REALLY nice finisher, and ruggedly handsome stone!

I have a Dans Translucent hone. It was dead flat upon arrival. And I use it with a Gokumyo synthetic “nagura” cleaning stone. When I want/need more than a light refresh.
I use water for both the slurry and finishing.
A lot of people use some sort of oil or smiths.
This is just what I do. But am very happy to have my Dans stone.
I am still waiting to hear from Michael at Zulu Grey Hones. Not sure what happened. He had a sale last year. I ordered a hone and then shortly later his site shut down. I know there has been big problems in SA. So prolly not going to get that  one unless things sort themselves out.

Yes...Michael the proprietor of ZG...I have purchased a few stones from Michael, always paid via Friends and Family, and never had any real issues.  He was a trusted member of the community for years.

Then he had that sale, and fell off of the grid.  He stopped responding to emails, and left a lot of paying customers in the lurch.  I don’t buy that he purposely tried to scam people...I suspect something terrible happened.

I don’t know that to be true, and I hope it’s not the case!

Sadly, if you want a ZG, Silkvein, or any other stone he produced, you will probably have to get one off of the BSTs.
