A serious question on Soap/Cream Reviews

Why would I write: "If Tabac is the gold standard, then I believe the bar being too low"  if I hadn't tried it?    I previously wrote that I don't comment on things I don't try. I've never driven a Ferrari so I'm not going to comment on them. I don't use straight edge razors so I don't comment on them.

In fact, I pulled it out yesterday, after remembering that article, and used it yesterday to refresh my memory where I had stuck it in a dark hole to forget about. I concur with Sharpologist's assessment. I found the scent offensive and strong, a bad combination. After shave feel was about non-existence which todays puts it out of the running among the best. It lathers easily and was somewhat hydrating. Technical performance was average compared to others I've tried. There was nothing special here and due to the scent and average performance, it ranked poorly for me. Since it cost a few pennies to buy, I can't complain about its cost but its not my replacement list.

I'm forced to wonder why you haven't written and recorded a damning review of this soap you classify as sub-par...

Clearly you dislike it based on personal experience, and clearly you would like to see more negative reviews published...

So why is this the first time any of us has seen anything negative about Tabac from you?

I am a consumer. I don't sell products nor lifestyles. Rather, I seek information. When JD Powers asks my opinion on the new car I just bought, I'll answer their survey. JD Power can accumulate the statistics and publish a report.   Sharpologist is like JD Powers in a way providing a service. You can agree with them or disagree with them. It doesn't change any facts. I concur with their assessment. You are free to disagree with their assessment. As a consumer, I could care less about youtube from the production side. They provide a service through advertising and "celebrities" reviews are their opinions similar to written ones done on commercial websites like Sharpologist in the sense they make money from advertisement.

Exactly. Thank you.  I concur with Sharpologist. Why does anyone care that Sharpologist doesn't like it either? Its soap - duh. Heaven forbid if I don't think Proraso or Razorock is elite stuff

I see.  I apologize.   I have to admit that I've failed to read all of your posts and did not take notes on the ones that I have read.  My bad.  However, I would point out that the writer on Sharpologist was factually inaccurate and apparently not very good with fractions.   Maurer & Wirtz was not a fragrance company that decided to start making shaving soap.  They were a soap company for over 100 years before Tabac was introduced.  Secondly, of the three categories that he rates he gives a 7/10, then says the rank of the soap is 6/10. Lastly, and most importantly, 2/3 of those categories are scent related.  

Look at your own remarks about Tabac, and also browse through the "Soaps I hated this year" thread and you will find that almost every negatively slanted review that you can find starts with a complaint about the fragrance.  Clearly, once a customer is put off by a fragrance, or lack thereof, then there is a tendency to find other faults with a soap.  I'm fairly certain, that on the other side of the coin, if a person loves some particular scent, those same flaws will be overlooked in that soap.

There are not, as far as I'm aware, any industry standard metrics for latherability, slickness, cushion, residual slickness or aftershave feel. Thus, all statements regarding these attributes are purely subjective and anecdotal.  One must suspect, based upon reading large numbers of negative statements about various shaving soaps, that the impression of  many of those attributes is colored by the user's first impression of the scent.  In music it may be argued that "It's all about the bass," but in shaving soap, it appears to be all about the scent.
