A serious question on Soap/Cream Reviews

I was reading a review today and came across the words "finest ingredients". So I googled those words to see what came up and those words were used in the marketing of a large range of food products ranging from beer to ice cream  and about everything in between, but also beauty products. And it occurred to me Who is going to say anything different?

Has anyone ever read a marketing description or a review of the same product that said something like

"We use the most mediocre ingredients we can find!" or a review that said:


"the ingredients in this pizza seemed mediocre at best"?

Marketing    just found that interesting. I would love to read any product description that said something like "We use cheap rubber but the air in our tires is really  good air"

You may love to read it but would you love to buy it? The air in our tires is nothing but the hottest. In fact, they're absolutely full of hot air.

Credit must be given where credit is due, dissatisfaction is also welcome when encountering a dissatisfying product. Fair reviews are a must have, whether they are positive or negative.

This in particular, Will is a real tragedy because I was just thinking the other day how i missed that weekly report. I used it to build a wishlist of things to try or avoid, maybe sample or buy outright with your analysis of the product. Even some you didnt like, i had on my try list simply because I thought it may work for me.

God forbid you say that Green Irish Tweed is synthetic and harsh, and the whole world falls apart.



As far as the topic at large, I really have had no real negative input to give on products as the performance of everything Ive tried has been really exceptional. In terms of scent, I will be one of the first to tell it like it is. I just threw out my puck of Tabac because I think the scent is rather offensive to my nose...quite harsh off the puck, and not something I wanted to deal with. I have published many posts about the crafting of certain scents and havent affronted anyone as of yet, but as a result of trying so many things, I know what I want and I avoid the things I know will not be enjoyable to me.


Furthermore I think there is a secular population that tends to be very peculiar about what they deem to be acceptable to the community and any positive feedback from these manufacturers outside of their preapproved list of product makers is taken as an offense to the world of shaving. If youre looking for the real cancer in the community is the group. Sure there is detriment on the other side of the spectrum when you see people overreacting to negative feedback, but there is a larger issue in the ostracizing of individuals who enjoy products that maybe a large group may not. Its almost discriminatory when conducted from a position of power, disallowing that individual's perspectives and anecdotes.

In summery, its not healthy for fall on one side or the other in overreacting to negative feedback, and blatantly ignoring the merits of individuals based on some deluded idealization of only a few manufacturers are good enough for the wet shaving community on the whole, and all else is unacceptable.

Credit must be given where credit is due, dissatisfaction is also welcome when encountering a dissatisfying product. That is the sign of a healthy market and a healthy community. I would say that some of these communities are quite unhealthy.


Love seeing everyones perspective on the state of wet shaving on the whole. Keep it up

I just can't believe how jacked up people get if their pet product isn't universally loved, or given the recognition it deserves.

My God, people it's just shaving.

It's true in fragrance, too. I used to write a weekly review on reddit and was quite vocal when I didn't like a certain perfume or felt that it was overpriced or overhyped or poorly designed (or all of these). This led to the creation of a thread on a certain forum where many users (some of whom have since come to DFS) questioned my experience, age, sanity, intelligence, taste, breeding, professionalism, etc etc. This hobby can become extremely ugly extremely quickly, so I can understand a hesitancy to make it known that you don't like something when the penalty for doing so could be truly vicious personal attacks. The ridiculous things that go on behind the scenes can be absolutely breathtaking in their callousness, cruelty, and tenacity.

I miss Fragrance Friday.

In the case of one of the major sites, they charge SO much for vendor fees, no up and coming artisan, (hardware or software) can afford them. Mostly, even when "crowd" excitement got to be overwhelming, (sometimes vendor, sometimes hobbyist), entire threads would disappear, even when there were hundreds of followers and fans. (Shout out to a guy who does beautiful Cerakote type restores..).

In the case of this particular major site, there are only a couple of "Non-Paying" artisans or shops who have managed to become so popular (I can only imagine the Skype talks among mods...), that I think they have to just let them go, but I can honestly think of only two or three.

Either way, even though I spout that, "It's just soap!", if we can't speak up about it, what's the point?
