The only Shapton Glass hones I have is the 16K. I do have a Suehiro G20K. the micron level is essentially identical, so they should both finish well.
The thing that I really like about the SG hones is the progression. You can go from 1K to 2K to 4K to 8K to 16K to 30K. When honing, doubling the grit size is ideal. I started with a set of Naniwa Superstones and the progression is 1K, 2K, 3K, 5K, 8K, 10K, 12K. Since the 16K is similar in grit size to the Naniwa 12K, it takes only 5 SG stones to get to the same place as 7 Naniwa stones. To minimize expense, so people skip a couple of the intermediate SuperStones.
I consider the SG16K stones and the Naniwa 12K to be similar. In my progressions I generally stop at the Naniwa 10K and then go either to the Suehiro G20K or one of my natural stones. My SG16K and SS12K get little use.
If you have a full set of Shapton Glass stones, I am certain you will get a great edge off the SG40K.
