Dear sir, suehiro gokumyo 20k is 0,5 mikron. Shapton 30 k is 0,49. As can we say that they are basically at same grit and should finish with one of them? Or should use gokumyo first and finish with shapton ? Ty

Can not speak to which is superiour nor the proper order of usage between the two stones cited but can state have the full suite of Shapton Glass Stones. The 30000 is an incredible finisher and Shapton glass stones all used in sequence resulting in perfect edges from new razors when setting an edge to touch ups. Fabulous.

I have both and they are equally efficient. The 30K does need less laps especially after coming from the 16K. The SG 20K will need more laps. Some razors will do better on one or the other but in general both will give the same superb edge. It's hard to pick a winner but I use the Shapton 30K 95% of the time. If you finish on the SG 20K you can pretty much call it a day. No need to move to a Shapton 30K. If you are still adamant to do so then I would not do more than 1 or 2 strokes on the Shapton 30K.

Ty very much

I ordered 500, 1k, 2k, 4k hc, 6k hc, 10k, 16k, and 30k of shaptons

If the edge is really bad ill start with 500 or 1k

In normal process 2k-6k hc-10k-16k-30k

4k will be edge refresher?

Am i right?

That has worked for me - but you may want to grab at least one stone of coarser grade for those extremely tough metal edge settings.  Primarily honing a pair of Boker Damascus razors. One other razor in particular required a far more aggressive approach. But for most part, give or take, that has worked well for me. Also, as with all stones, be sure to lap regularly and properly

I would. At least you have it if needed. Already spent quite a bit so the little incremental not a big deal. Contact vendor and ask to include it to save shipping. Also the combination 3 stone storage and stone holders are outstanding in my experience. Bought extas to keep the stones organized

The only Shapton Glass hones I have is the 16K. I do have a Suehiro G20K. the micron level is essentially identical, so they should both finish well.

The thing that I really like about the SG hones is the progression. You can go from 1K to 2K to 4K to 8K to 16K to 30K. When honing, doubling the grit size is ideal. I started with a set of Naniwa Superstones and the progression is 1K, 2K, 3K, 5K, 8K, 10K, 12K. Since the 16K is similar in grit size to the Naniwa 12K, it takes only 5 SG stones to get to the same place as 7 Naniwa stones. To minimize expense, so people skip a couple of the intermediate SuperStones.

I consider the SG16K stones and the Naniwa 12K to be similar. In my progressions I generally stop at the Naniwa 10K and then go either to the Suehiro G20K or one of my natural stones. My SG16K and SS12K get little use.

If you have a full set of Shapton Glass stones, I am certain you will get a great edge off the SG40K.
