I guess 2017 really will be the year of the GEM SE.

I have to ask myself why? The blade selection is Spartan at best with little if any modern blade technology being implemented for these "dinosaurs". As well, with Personna (Edgewell) as the only U.S. maker and being sold twice in the past couple of years I would not bank on the blades being made much longer as they cannot possibly be a money maker. That leaves the Pakistani Treet carbon blades.

why not? the GEM style blade lasts most people almost 10X as long as a regular DE blade.

All these new razors are basically betting on the one and same horse in the race, because I imagine that most Gem razor users use the Personna Gem PTFE blades in their razors. Let’s hope that blade continues to be made, because I can’t imagine that substituting it with some Gem scraper blade would be a very comfortable option…

While there is a valid argument for the GEM blades falling out of favour and off the earth, this same discussion occurred when the oneblade hit the market and the Single Edge Feathers were selected. I understand even Amazon is now stocking these blades...just making an observation.

With at least four new GEM offerings in the market, you would think that vendors would start looking to fill the demands for blades.

Personna is a business. They already have the machines and processes in place. As long as demand for the blades remains high, there's no logical reason to cease production. They won't be stopping production on scraper blades anytime soon, and the difference is quite literally 0.1mm and the final coating.

I could be wrong but it certainly seems as though the market for the blades and the razors could work off of each other to increase demand on both sides...

This particular design isn't as appealing to me because I don't see how it is any different than the old school GEMs. Unless it is a 3-piece. It's hard to tell from the picture whether it's a flip top or 3-piece. I think I might stick to the vintages over this one, although for only $25, it could be worth a try. But like EFDan said, highly doubt that will be the final price.
