Scentsless Shaver
Oakland, ME
Here is a heretical post: I got a fantastic shave this afternoon in only one pass with very minimal touch ups (lower lip and two areas of weirdness on my neck). I had my trusting Slim set to 6, a Red Personna on its third shave, my wonderful Omega Pro 49, and Mike's Natural Soaps Unscented. Since I was shaving in the early afternoon and have to shave for work early tomorrow morning, I planned to set the Slim low and do an easy two pass. At the last moment, I decided to set it high (for me) and do an attentive one pass. I admit I was influenced by a scene in the Cary Grant movie Crisis, in which he shaves while wearing his shirt and walking around talking to his wife. He does a sort of one pass and looks good (I realize he didn't really shave, but I was playing along!).

Well, I got a great shave, very comfortable and very smooth. Biggest downside I can think of is that I didn't get to play more with the lather and all!

With the grain mostly, and some across the grain. More about attention to the area and what works best in that area.

I have a shave I call my work shave, which I do when I'm in a hurry. I can get a shave that looks great for business meetings with my Muhle R41 in one pass with very minor touchups. Did so this morning with Speick cream.

Interestingly, my skill with the R41 has greatly increased since I started shaving with a straight.

Occasionally I do a one-pass shave with one of my three most efficient razors: BlackBird, Rx, or Wolfman .74mm - ATG+XTG. While the BlackBird is my best shaver when it comes to "normal" three-pass shaves, the Rx shines when I do only one pass.

I love the Slim and Mike's soap, so that's a good combo.

I frequently do a 1-pass (ATG) with touch-ups -- as my work shave. More frequently, I'll use a 2-pass (WTG, ATG), as that doesn't take much longer and is more likely to be a really smooth shave.

There's a place for minimal-pass shaves. I think that, if it's done right, the skin can benefit from it. Done wrong, of course, it would be bad. I still like doing the full 3-pass shave when I can, though. It's luxurious and feels great!
