2023 DFR (Damn Fine Restraint)

Just out of curiosity, how many made it through January with no purchases? 

I made it only because i screwed up and missed a release.

I bought my first non-electric razor the other day. It hasn't arrived yet and I've already got the itches for collecting more. Send help.

Lol it's a good joke. Still. I think it's important to justify the ti over the alu. I have yet to see anything too concrete saying that ti is necessarily better (esp for the $$$, compared to other upgrades).

Personally, by buying used the difference was far less. The alu fetches much closer to retail than ti does. In my truest collection hobby, bicycles, I buy a lot of titanium bikes. 20+ frames. $80 extra to go ti here seemed fitting, compared to the $$$ I'll drop on a bike. Also, it's just cooler. Aesthetics is a perfectly valid reason to go for a fancier material.

I was feeling very proud of myself for making it this far, then I took a look at the dates and realized I had joined on 1/19, so I'm only about 2 weeks in.

It's crazy how slow time can go. The intention is to see how long I can make it, not to hold my purchases off for a month.

One month in, I have not felt as if this is a period of "restraint," austerity, or deprivation. Simple enjoyment without posting pictures or wondering "what am I missing" has brought a welcome peace of mind. 

As I reflect on "falling down the rabbit hole" and my initial acquisitions gluttony, this morning I remembered an old-timey song some goober recorded a decade before he was introduced to the gentlemanly art of shaving. Was this a prophetic inspiration or just coincidence?

I have a bad ear for "twang,"  but I did get a line repeated about the rabbit being gone! But even more stunning to me is how fast he plays and how good it sounds. I always think of banjos as right up there with kazoos, but that is because of how ignorant and sheltered I am. Steve Martin opened my eyes a few years ago to banjo music, as he is quite taken with it and even made an album. So, Thank You for the post, I did enjoying the music and watching this guy so effortlessly making music!

I larn'ed me that song at my first old-time music festival in Surrey County, NC. The band camped next to me was a competitive band called "The April Fools," and their fiddler was excellent. I always thought that was a great band name. And a honkin' toon.

In an interview Steve Martin said that he played the banjo in his early stand-up act because he didn't have enough material. He is quite the accomplished banjoist.

Well, it seems like I've gone a month without shaving-related purchases. Let's see how long I can keep this going.

I have gone back to some of the stuff that was squirreled away in drawers and have been trying them out again before making a decision on whether or not to get rid of them.

The DFR thread has been good for me.
