From my time hiring out plating of vintage Gillettes, I am almost certain you can't plate SS. Gillettes are base brass with nickle. It has been a while since being immersed in the plating world. My memory isn't the best.

You can indeed plate stainless steel, but depending on composition may need an additional step of plating with nickel to get the best bond.  In fact, many metals, including titanium, can be gold plated depending on process - it's just not the most durable of plating metals.

Right on. And looking at Razor Emporium website it says they do SS. I stand sufficiently corrected. Carry on.

Should also clarify that gold plating, regardless of purity, on any metal in use will eventually change and wear off to the point it needs to be replated to restore the original appearance.  Just the facts of life.  If you put a piece of gold plated jewelry away in a climate-controlled environment, never wear it, never touch it, never allow it to contact other materials, it will last a long time.  It will still tarnish slowly, depending on the underlying substrate, but it won't wear, assuming the proper process when plated.  Plating on a razor, on the other hand, will wear and change much faster, particularly to the point in contact with chlorinated water, caustic soap or other cosmetics.  My best guess would be 2 or 3 years before noticeable change, depending on the original thickness, and perhaps Murat will offer a replating service.  Not being able to dissassemble the razor, it doesn't seem it would really be a project you could source to a commercial plating service.  Or, alternatively, you could just allow it to age gracefully and use as-is (my plan). Something to be said for aging gracefully.... Smile

Looks like he will be producing a full sized one about 2 years from now.  Gives us time to save Wink

So much can happen in two years time in the shaving world. It seems more players are entering the shaving product arena.

The Master just landed.  Here are some quick pictures.  The other razor is the 2021 Prototype.  The handle on the Master is 13.8mm vs 14.7mm on the Prototype...and MC is 1/4" longer.  The MD weighs 141g. The prototype is 146g.

Murat told me some time ago he produced (10) 2021's that had a smaller diameter handle.  He did it for those demanding a lighter weight.  I think it cut 10g or so.  It was a "slim" version.  I actually had one of them on order when the MC was introduced.  I switched my order. essentially.  I only bring it up because I think the MC has the Slim's handle diameter but 1/4" added to the length.

Initial impressions:
  • Balance point is virtually the same, about a 1/4" behind the knurling.
  • The smaller diameter and added length is noticeable.  In a good way.  The MC feels like it will be easier to control.
  • Despite only a 5g weight difference, the MC feels even lighter.
  • The finish looks to be the same.  The big difference is the ends of the head on the MC is brushed instead of polished.
  • If there is a difference in the head, I can't see it.
The 24kt gold ring IG post says "please contact us for your customized orders".  That makes me think there may be some other finish options?  Full mirror would be cool.  Just a thought.
