As most of you I now I'm a newbie to wet shaving and I appreciate all the answers to questions I've asked but I have another.

When I watch wet shaving videos for guidance or entertainment it appears every wet shaving item is WONDERFUL  or AMAZING

or the BEST EVER?

To date I've only found one guy (Ohio shaves) who appears to give an honest review.

Who else should I be watching?

Most of them are pretty bad about undeclared shilling. Some are entertaining and fewer useful. I am CDB, I think it is, does have some good lather tutorials. The only one that I can really recommend personally is Geofatboy. Yeah he owns a shave shop, but at least he isn't hiding anything. I think he is honestly trying to be a good teacher and not just get people to his web shop. That excludes some controversy surrounding straight razors that I won't mention unless it's relevant.

I too enjoy watching Geofatboy. I learned from watching his videos and he always does a great job of explaining things thoroughly and easily.

A little dated and nerdy, but I really enjoy Mantic59. He taught me "everything my father never taught me about shaving."

You have to find the YouTube channels that provide the kind of content you're looking for. Not all of them are getting free things from vendors and then shilling it for them. Also not all of them are instructional channels. Some are just for camaraderie or entertainment. I enjoy Kevy shaves and a handful of others to watch.

Most of the YouTube shaving influencers rely on product provided to them by the manufacturers/vendors. Thus, their reviews are primarily infomercials. They are afraid to post a negative review because they are afraid that their source of free stuff will disappear. That is unfortunate as it means you are unable to obtain the most useful information from the videos. In the case of Geofatboy of Shave Nation, Matt from Razor Emporium, and the West Coast Shaving daily shave videos, these guys are trying to sell the products they are advertising.

There are two YouTubers who did "tell it like it is" but neither is still active. One is Jason Rudman of Ruds Shaves. He had a numerical system for evaluating soaps. However, some artisans began producing soaps that were so good that they broke his system. He was assigning rating in excess of 100 points, so his evaluations were no longer meaningful. I now have several soaps in my collection that are far superior to any Ruds evaluated.

Another good YouTuber was Michael Freedberg. He stopped making videos nearly two years ago. However, he posted some useful videos in his time. He was another one who was not afraid to post a negative review. When he posted a negative review of the Parker 24C open-comb razor, some of his viewers noted that the irritation he experienced likely was due to shaving with the wrong angle for the razor. He posted an update concerning shaving angles and that same razor was seen in many shaves going forward.

So even though the videos from these two might be older, you still might find them useful.

One interesting review I watched was done by Brad of Maggard Razors. He was reviewing the Fatip razors which he sells. He was very candid in reporting that the fit and finish of the Fatip razors was poor. That is unusual for someone who is trying to sell a product.

One need also consider that some people cherry pick products for review that are likely to appeal to their tastes.

I certainly try to review products that are perceived as well conceived and executed thru research prior to ever offering on passaround. Use the criteria as a way to weed out products unlikely to be able to review well, for one because have no interest in providing a less than enthusiastic review of a vendor's life work and monetary investment - that is just bad karma. What good does it do anybody to comment on something having embarked with a negative predisposition?

However, under no condition, will I shill nor tolerate passaround participants shilling and by same token, won't tolerate abusing vendors. Participants are encouraged to review honestly avoiding unfair and unkind commentary while being constructive with criticism. Hitherto have not had to intervene and hope it remains so in the future. Honesty is one thing, spitefulness quite another.

I've heard plenty of YouTube shave videos where the person plainly says they bought an item with there own money.
Maybe guys don't like a product but know it's a personal preference and not a terrible product.
Maybe just keep checking out different channels to find a good fit for you.
Several guys on DFS that enjoy  putting out some videos.
Dave, Zac, and Garrett come to mind and I'm sure there's plenty more I'm not connecting to the member.
I find great information on all of their channels.
Be sort of nice to have a thread for videos on here but I don't remember seeing such a thing.
