I like to use unscented and alcohol-free witch hazel followed by unrefined shea butter and/or argan oil. There's not much in the way of potential irritants in there and it does a better job of soothing and conditioning my skin than another product I've come across. I save the pennies to go towards actual fragrance (i.e. Cologne, Eau de parfum etc) instead.
As a pre-shave, I actually use a moisturizer for my skin. My skin can get dry and if it's not properly moisturized before the shave, then the essential or fragrance oils and the general act of shaving seems to cause more irritation for me.
For post-shave, Stirling Soap Company has an Unscented version of their Aftershave splash and their aftershave balm. Very minimal ingredients, which would hopefully help with the irritation.
