Wolfman WR2 Gap Question

Hi all - I got my email from Wolfman and have blade gap paralysis preventing my order. I have taken a look at previous Gap posts here and can't quite draw a comparison to my facts. Any thoughts you may have would be greatly appreciated.

I have been using a DE for more than 20 years. Over that time I started with a series of Merkurs eventually finding my way to a Merkur slant, Ikon slant, ATT combs and bar heads. I also have used straights as well. Now my daily driver setup is a Timeless scalloped .95 for one pass and a timeless .68 for the second.

I enjoy the timeless overall but due to covid and working from home I do not need to shave as often so when I do I have heavy growth and it clogs something fierce. So my thought was to due a combo bar/comb WR2 head with differing Gaps. Using the comb side for the growth and the bar side for second pass or light growth.

From what I have read here 1.15 seems like the place to be for the bar side. As for the comb side, what would be a good gap that would make conquering growth cause less of a clog on the razor. Any thoughts on the my assumption for the SB gap and a gap recommendation on the OC side would be greatly appreciated.

Had a stainless Timeless .68 and .95 OC.
Sold the .95 base but want it back now!
Had the WR2 with DC 1.15 (SB and OC)...sold that because not 'aggressive/efficient' enough (for me).
I'd like another WR2 but probably 'at least' 1.25 gap. The WR2 is so smooth that the bigger gap won't cause you problems with blade feel, harshness, etc.
I haven't got around to buying a new Timeless .95 OC base yet as currently my main 'go to' is a stainless Karve with #F (SB) plate...and I have the #G plate too but haven't used that too much yet.
I think you will need more than the 1.15 gap.
Given that you also have the same Timeless setup that I had/have I think you will be happier with the WR2 1.25 and upwards.

There is a lot of content about Wolfman blade gaps, because the razors are expensive but you cannot be sure until you try a particular razor.  They hold their value on the secondary market so, if you can “float” the money and you are patient, you can experiment over time.  Also, everyone’s face and perspective is different.  So, YMMV....  For what it’s worth, I offer the following:  I like to shave every day, and do not have a particularly heavy beard.  I have the 1.25 SB, the 1.15 SB, and the 1.15 OC.  [I do not have the 1.25 OC].  The difference between the 1.15 SB and the 1.25 SB is noticeable but probably less than you might think.  They are both efficient and smooth razors.  The difference between the 1.15 SB and 1.15 OC feels like more than the difference between the 1.15 SB and the 1.25 SB.  The 1.15 OC is still nice and smooth though. With the 1.15 OC, I have to pay attention to the amount of pressure used. (Definitely more forgiving than more aggressive razors like the Blackbird, though.  The lighter Darwin handle helps).  If you have a thick beard, and don’t shave every day, you could go for a 1.25 OC for the first-pass side, because the 1.25 SB is also smooth and comfortable. (Especially if I skip a day. Even the 1.55 SB is smooth, with good technique. The WR2 is an amazing design). For the second-pass side, you could get the 1.15 SB. The 1.15 SB is very nearly as smooth as the Timeless 68, and is still quite efficient.

Unfortunately, until you actually use the razors for a while, you won’t know for certain, but my experience indicates that good prep, good soap, and proper technique play a much bigger role than incremental gap variances.  People often say that SB vs. OC is about the same as a “blade gap jump up” on the Wolfman razors.  I suspect the SB vs. OC is a little bit more than that.  To my face, with the WR2 head, the shift from SB to OC makes the razor more pressure-sensitive.  (I also like razors that reward proper technique with a super close and smooth shave.  That’s part of the appeal of this hobby, to me).

The Timeless .95 SB is one of my favorite razors. When my name came up for a Wolfman, I went with the WR2 1.25 SB. To me it seems a hair more aggressive and less comfortable than then Timeless .95.

I have a feeling the 1.15 would be a closer match to the Timeless .95

Trust me, either go WR2 1.35 DC, or go for the gusto and get a WR2 1.55 SB. Since you're a straight shaver the big 1.55 won't intimidate you, and for all of the gap it is smooth as silk. IMHO.
