Wild Whetstone Ancient Ocean Jasper

Epic, Matt! What a stone and razor.

Wow, what an edge this Tomo slurry and the Jasper produced. I’m giddy!!! Screaming edge. I about spit my beer across the room laughing all giddily.

Mannnnn!!! What a sharp and smooth edge the jasper produced. The Tomo slurry really kicked it up a notch.

I am happy you like the stone, but if this is Arkansas stone, his prices are a bit high.
I like to use my shapton pro stones, lately got coticule and Jnat. I am new in natural stones. My Jnat is Light Asagi. Not as high as Nakayama.
After get some experience with my Jnat, I would like to decide what I want next.
I put this stone in my list, but I might keep my money for a nice Nakayama, but they are very expensive.

The Jasper is not an Arkansas stone.  Those all sound like great JNATs!  I don’t think that you can go wrong with a nice Nakayma finisher from a reputable dealer/source.

Gents,

I have been fooling around with progressions and edges, and I think I am close to perfecting an edge for my face.  

Here is my current progression that I am really really liking:

- Chosera 1k

- Shapton Glass 4K

- Naniwa 8k (white lobster mark)

- Ancient Ocean Jasper on the finishing side with Oozuku Tomo Nagura slurry...I do 20 laps initially and then start diluting down with a couple of water sprays ever 10 laps until there is just water left

- Ancient Ocean Jasper with light stream of water on it for 7-10 laps as the pre-finishing step.


At this point In the progression I have been getting incredible sharp, crisp, and surprisingly smooth edges.  The bevel near the edge is a mirror to the eye, and often most of the scratch pattern has been removed under a 30x loupe.  The razor is completely shave ready.

However, wanting to see if I could get just a shade more smoothness I have now done a few edges off of the Dan’s Translucent Arkansas stone with WD40, and I have tested two off of the Escher Barbers Gem.

The edges off of the Trans Ark have been getting 50-100 of the lightest laps I can manage, and they have been fantastic...exactly what I was looking for...a shade smoother, without sacrificing much sharpness at all!

I also tested two edges off of the Escher (one with slurry diluted down to water and one with just straight water) and they have gotten 50-60 laps.  These edges have also felt incredibly smooth without sacrificing much sharpness.

I would be hard pressed to pick either of these stones over the other as the final finisher...more testing is required.
