why do people get banned at shaving sites?

Hi everyone
I have been exploring DFS with some excitement, as a lot of the folks I know from other sites are here. I don't know why DFS was started, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was an element of frustration with the rules and restrictions of others forums. But something I really don't understand is the notion of BANNING. I am not a super-savvy forum user, so excuse my ignorance.

My question: what does it mean to ban someone, and why would someone be banned from a shaving site? Did they refuse to shave? Some of you have the word "banned" under your handles on other forums, yet to me you are some of the most valuable posters all over the shaving universe.

what is going on? Do people get banned here at DFS? Is it irreversible?

There is WAY too much teenage drama in wet shaving.

shega, users get banned for many reasons, breaking forum rules is one, but mostly valuable users get banned, because someone doesn't like what they have to say. Let it go and enjoy DFS

Dan, there are different reasons for banning a member, some quite legitimate, some not so much.  For example, if a site has a rule that cursing is not permitted or belittling another member is off limits but it's done on a pretty consistent basis, even after a warning, the offending member may be banned, and probably with good cause.

However, some boards are run by owners who might have a particular agenda and ban members for frivolous reasons, such as praising a product too much that the owner doesn't like.  That, to me, is very unfair.  If a site owner, administrator, or moderator only wants "yes" people that, in my eyes, diminishes the board. I think that is where you start to see folks leaving one site and joining another.

Ultimately, it's a balancing act and that is not always cut and dried.  Boards such as DFS (and any other shaving site, for that matter) are made up of many people from different backgrounds, different beliefs, and different temperaments.  The one common denominator is our love of wet shaving.  Other interests may grow from that (think about some of our interests in "The Lounge") and as long as they are done with respect then I believe that can only enrich DFS, no banning needed.

A major reason is that some sites are advertising arms of various entrepeneurs and vendors.  Anything that they feel affects their bottom line is a basis for banning-e.g., people being petty or nasty [except for moderators] or shilling for another vendor or artisans are big no-no's.
At the site you referred to, I was almost banned for asking about banning and why the ugliness of have strikethroughs in names, with the word "banned" underneath is being used.  It only makes the place uninviting.

if people continually break the forum rules (very basic & probably the least amount of rules on any shaving forum, period) when they're asked to knock it off, that could be cause for a ban. there's also other things like spammers & bots. so far, our ban list has exactly 0 people on it!

this is also true. sadly they're some of the larger forums out there. that is part of the reason I decided to start this forum (really, bring this forum back and start from scratch as this forum did exist about 3 years ago) - I'm a neutral party with 0 bias towards any vendor/artisan products.

1. Follow the money.
2. Pride
3. Ego trips
4. Virtual power plays to make up for lack of real life significance.
5. Simple disagreement
6. Someone actually broke the rules repeatedly.

Points listed in order of most common/likely to least.

Thank you everyone. That pretty much explains it. I didn't know if it was real or some kind of a gag that people engaged in. "ban the user above you" threads and so forth.

I wish this forum much prosperity and it is good to see so many familiar names around.
