Saturnia is arguably the best scent in all shavedom. Off the puck it is rich and heady and manly, but the treat is in a wet brush tickling that sulphur note forward and it is transformed into something even better.  The smell of sulphur in steamy clouds from a hot springs are glorious and a scent that sends me to so many memories both ancient and modern. I love this scent and soap.

Nature (Martin de Candre) Cambodian oud
Shave 1 ・ 231 g left

About a month ago, because I’m a sucker for rare things, I ordered some tiny vials of real oud oil. Each one was like a little mystery waiting to happen. I put the tiniest dots of it on my arm – barely enough to call a dot, really – and then sat there sniffing like some kind of addict. Every one of them opened up differently. One smelled like smoke and pine. Another like fruit. Then there were the truly strange ones: cheese, rotten wood, manure – yes, poop. But they all had this shared vibe, this deep, woody pull. And as they dried, they got even better: smoky incense, hot tar, honey, and, believe it or not, gasoline. I couldn’t stop sniffing my arm. I’m into odd things – just like you – and I knew right then I needed this wild, hypnotic essence of oud in my shaving soap.

So, naturally, I ordered a pot of Martin de Candre’s Nature. The label says it’s “unscented,” but to me, it smells like frankincense and benzoin, which seemed like the perfect blank canvas. Then I did something that probably voided every warranty. I stabbed two dozen tiny holes in the soap, poured in a vial of Cambodian oud oil – 0.2 grams of liquid gold – and let it soak in for a few hours. What came out the other side was magic. The scent was so potent my wife caught a whiff from thirty feet away. She said she liked it from a distance but up close? “It makes me crosseyed.” Fair enough.

For me, though, it was Nirvana. This is no ordinary oud soap, dressed up with synthetic aroma chemicals. It’s the real deal – an intoxicating, authentic scent blended with Martin de Candre’s legendary performance and longevity. If you ever wanted to turn a mundane chore like shaving into a bizarrely unique experience, this is the way to go.
