Today I went easy on the water, aiming for a thick, cushioning lather. It came out buttery smooth and dense, like sour cream. I was also aiming for a slick lather, which usually means adding more water. But Frank says to improve the slip of his F-base soaps, you need to spare the water and instead do a lot of painting. Taking his advice, I built the lather on my palm, working the brush steadily back and forth until I could feel it growing slicker between my fingers. It took a while, but I could sense the lather changing from stodgy to slick. A few more drops of water brought up the sheen. I rubbed the lather from my palm deep into my face, then added a top coat of glistening lather from the brush. Glorious, good shaving!
No burn after the scraping either. I attribute that former fiery sensation to a combination of using a new razor and overwatering the lather. Seems that I was riding the bar with the razor. That was efficient but ultimately painful. And at the same time I was diluting the lather’s cushion. Double whammy. Now, everything is fine since I found my angle and started using a drier brush.
