TL;DR: Shavemac knots, ask Bernd for extra density on pure and finest, rest is good, or buy a Romera Manchurian knot when/if he still does knot sales for my personal references, otherwise buy whatever as if I had unlimited funds I’d be trying everything mentioned here
Shavemac, and Romera Manchurian knots are about the only options I can think of in terms of ready made knots that I would recommend not knowing what you like. Anything in Shavemac’s hair grade is great. I’d suggest asking Bernd making an extra dense knot on pure or finest. The others don’t need it. Bernd might call it a unique knot. I know my large Shavemac bruisers have unique unofficially tagged onto it which just means extra density. Romera knots I haven’t had any new ones for 3 years at least so I’m not sure if they’re still like what I have. Usually I can tell if it’s close by looking.
The other ready made knots out there are just too processed at the tips for my liking. They’re gel tipped, but not in a good way. Too slimy. Rooney 2-band Heritage has always been the standard for me, and it took a bit for that to grow on me, but my preference is for more of a natural, unprocessed tip. I want the tips to retain some presence to give a slight feeling of working on the face. I don’t need boar exfoliating, but it needs to have some tip presence to me.
The gel process when done right is very unique and different, and I appreciate it, but honestly I’m good with 3-band Silvertip overall. That just ticks the boxes for me personally. That isn’t to say I don’t appreciate the differences 2-band can bring. I’m a sucker for the shaving brush, and it’s a hard thing not to explore the latest thing to come out. For my experiences paying the extra for name brand is worth it. In my case I get around the extra cost often by buying used.
