Strangely enough, many press photographers did not utilize all or even a few of the methods available to them with these remarkable "press" cameras.
They would use one aperture, setting the focus at the hyperfocal distance and use flash almost all the time at or close to a distance that would give them the proper exposure. If it was off they would correct in the darkroom by over or under developing either or both the negative and/or the print.
They also relied on the latitude of the black and white film which was not very wide in those days.
