Central Maine
Anyone contemplating a Maine trip... I love the autumn up here and I always took 2 weeks of vacation in the first half of October and always got the autumn leaves.
Yes, Maine has small cities and Rt1 along the coast where all the tourists flock, but if one gets a Gazzeteer and heads off to lesser known places off of the beaten path the real Maine shows itself. It's a big state and it takes time to see. But if I had just a few days and wanted to get a smattering of Maine I would go to (and it pains me to write this due to the crowds) Acadia. But even there one can sort of get away and see things sort of off the beaten path. Yet there one can still get a sampling of what Maine offers since it has mountains and coast. It also has the only true fjord in the continental US so the park rangers there claim.
