I use an aftershave balm as a face moisturizer. I like it because it's not as heavy has other moisturizers. I use one that has unrefined shea butter, but I found that the "new version" replaces this with refined shea butter. Are there beneficial properties stripped out from the refining?

Some but not that you'll notice imo. There are plenty of articles that will tell you unrefined is better, and I don't deny that but it's not a big deal imo. I own and use both in personal care products, as well as body butters for my wife. She can't tell the difference which I use other than that strong nutty smell when using the unrefined in a butter.

I should add that my wife doesn't apply shea butter straight, thus I shouldn't say it's unnoticeable to her. I make her body butters with 50% shea (or cocoa and mango) and the rest coconut oil and a soft oil, or some other oils. She doesn't like applying it plain, plus the butter lasts longer and looks nicer.
