So two years ago when my Grandfather died I inherited his old razors. Having no idea what I was doing, I went to Walmart and bought the Van Der Hagen "deluxe shaving kit". The soap was awful but two years later I'm truly impressed with the boar brush it came with and the lathering bowl is also good looking and performs well.  The brush is no Simpsons or Plisson but I still use it and it performs dang well.... Not much I like from Walmart but for the price and years used....... There are worse ways to spend 22-30 dollars

If you've never tried a different brush then you should. I thought the same thing even after I picked up my first Omega boar. Then I used the Omega for a month or so before picking the VDH back up. The VDH was so much worse. Thin air filled lathers compared to the Omega.

I have several brushes now from badger to boar to synthetics.   From makers Simpsons, Vie Long, and omega as well.  For the price point and for its intended purpose, I don't think the VH does a bad job and some people seem to be held to the ideal that only high priced gear performs well and works.  Two years later, the VH brush I started with works fine for me, and while,it is far from my best brush, people can readily pick these up at big box stores which, is one of the few WS items sold at such stores.

+1 the Van Der Hagen kit. Just waiting on another one to come from amazon. Did some price checking and the MUG alone is worth it, so the rest is just gravy. It also makes my top 10 amazon gifts for male members of my family as a present when they all want mine. While the brush is good, even a basic chepo chinese ebay nylon synthetic will blow you away!

I know the feeling! I got a Van Der Hagen "Premium Set" for $5.99 on sale at Publix Supermarket here in Miami FL. I still use the brush and the bowl, can't beat that deal!

+1 on the vdh kit. I got my start in wet shaving with their kit. The only thing I use from it anymore is the mug. But for the price they give you a great package.
