I have had one of these for quite a long time, and I have a long-handled Progress to compare it with. I like them both, but the Variant has some major advantages over the Progress.
1) The presence of holes in the base-plate. It is so much easier to rinse out than the Progress.
2) The overall feel and grip. This feels nicer in the hand and the knurling and balance is better for me than the Progress.
Otherwise they're pretty similar. I've had several Mergress modifications to the Progress and I found them to be nice, but unnecessary. The Variant is a big step forward for general usability and a much better use of money when compared to the Mergress (for me).
