Hi Joe,

I like the Razorock SLAB i'm using currently. Not sure how the GC compares to this razor, but looks very nice on the website. Nick Shaves gave a great review also. The Mamba is a beautiful razor which I want to purchase but not 100% sure. I know you will sell a bunch of the GC's due to the price point and looks.

I’m an engineer in an unrelated product development field. I understand the chaos of launch schedules all too well. I’m waiting patiently - if checking my email regularly to be sure I don’t miss out can be called patient!

Fwiw, I confirmed that the KAI is significantly wider than other blades. Of the dozen usual-suspect blades I’ve checked now, most are 0.004” thick and 0.864” wide.

The outliers are:
KAI 0.876” wide
Derby Extra 0.869” wide
Polsilver 0.865” wide
Bic Chrome Platinum 0.859” wide

KAI is almost 1/3 millimeter wider than typical.

I’m not really convinced the KAI is even as sharp as it is reputed to be, at least not straight out of the wrapper. It does, however, have quite a bit more blade exposure. It does seem to get significantly sharper with use though. For me, that means a fresh KAI should be used on my face first to wear down the coating or polish the edge or whatever) while the lather or cream soaks on my neck.

I’m not quite ready to call it, but I suspect the KAI is going to be the best blade for the Mamba.

The Derby Extra is slightly wider too, but not enough to make up for being dull imho.

The Mamba+GC together seem like a 6s killer to me. It’s not a question of which will be better. To me they will both have a place. Maybe they should be boxed as a set! Big Grin

Sooo ... the KAI is 0.012” wider than typical blades, smooth, and sharp after it wears in a bit. The Bic Chrome Platinum is 0.005” narrower than typical, smooth, starts out very sharp, gets sharper, and holds that sharp edge better than the Feather.

There’s no doubt that the KAI feels more aggressive. The added blade exposure provides a LOT more blade feel.

The Bic is very mild [in the Mamba] with very little blade feel. It’s a night-and-day difference from the KAI.

But which shaves closer? Well, the Bic. Sacrificing my face to science, I switched out the blades frequently during this morning’s shave. In a nutshell, the Bic was closer and smoother with less irritation.

In other words, the KAI was more aggressive, but the Bic was more efficient. Hmmmm ....

Personally I love the BIC, it's one of my regular blades, but the forums are full of people who hate them, who definitely don't consider them mild. I would not either, I find them adequately smooth and very sharp.

I should have said the Bic was very mild in the Mamba. I probably won’t try it in a slant or anything with a lot of blade exposure anytime soon ....

The Mamba is something to buy just for appreciating its well thought of design, manufacture and high tolerances. The head geometry, simplicity of design and the fact that its personalized due to serial numbers. Small touches like these make the razor standout. And while a lot of people dismiss it off as a mild razor, with a sharp blade and the right angle its very efficient for a 3 pass BBS.

The post above about having a Mamba and the GC to cover a range of "adjustability" is a great idea and if something more aggressive is desired, the wunderbar can fill in. Besides RR now has seven handles to choose from!!
