SOTD MONDAY MORNING, APRIL 26, 2021

Of all my vintage razors, I really enjoy shavings with my old Frederick Reynolds ‘faux’ Frameback. Unlike a genuine frameback, these “rattler” grinds followed the traditional wedge grind and predated the hollow grinds we all know and love. Unlike hollow grinds which are done vertically, these old “rattler” grinds were done horizontally. A true frameback has a separate blade fitted into a separate spine. These faux framebacks represent a solid piece of steel. The issue with many of them, mine included, is that it requires some true hone gymnastics to set an even bevel on this wavy blade. Even touch ups take longer than all my other razors, but the shave, is well worth it. It takes a good edge, but like many of the earlier steels will only hold it 10 to 15 shaves before requiring a touch up. The three pass mug shave put the baby to bed, and was followed by a correspondingly excellent two pass noggin shave with my Rex Ambassador that left me refreshed, clean and very smooth.

RAZOR: Frederick Reynolds 5/8 Rattler (Mug), Rex Ambassador
BLADE: Feather DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Viking Silvertip Badger
CREAM: Castle Forbes Lime
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash followed by a rinse with Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Royall Lyme AS/Cologne.

Nice picture, love the black and pink theme. Dark and mysterious, yet beautiful springy, too.

Beautiful brush! Love the mix at the bottom, which looks like a great shape to fit in the hand.

Who makes it, if I may ask? Thanks.

Many thanks ! In the section "Brushes" I have indicated everything.

Rooney Stubby 1 Porcelain Finest (22/45)
Acqua di Parma Colonia shaving soap (original)
Wilkinson Bonded System (3)
Acqua di Parma Colonia aftershave

A wonderful Acqua di Parma shave. The Wilkinson razor once again gave me a BBS shave, equal in closeness and smoothness to those of my double edge razors and easily the closest of any single edge I have ever used. However, for me shaving is about much more than just the end result; it is just as much about the 'journey,' the experience. And I find that I miss the weight in my hand of the DE razors. So the Wilkinson will stay in my rotation, at times, but will not replace the others. For someone who wants a SE in their razor rotation, I can recommend this one very highly.
