"Gillette Goodwill razor (re-plated)
Wizamet (2)
Cold River Soapworks “Oliva”
Zenith boar
CC Venture AS

This is a very mild razor with inadequate blade-alignment control.  But hey, the Company put them all together with mostly spare parts and then “gave” them away if you paid a dollar to buy a 10-pack of their “new” (read that as their “newly-acquired” patents) blades.  Because users could not use the old-type blades with this razor, Gillette acquired a captive customer base and a monopoly on the new blades. It wasn’t that much of a give by Gillette, since the company made its money on blades (rather than razors).  And Gillette’s production costs for these razors were low.  Its decision to call this the “Goodwill” razor was a herculean display of Corporate hubris at the start of the “Great Depression,” which was one of the most lengthy and painful economic downturns in the history of mankind.  [This ingenious marketing strategy addressed the fact that, under Federal law, Gillettes existing patents were expiring.  The patent laws were intended to promote innovation, by allowing inventors to recoup the costs of R&D.  Then, by forcing patent expiration after a time, the law sought to promote market competition based on previously-protected technologies.  This was intended to drive down customer costs]. In a fight for its corporate life, Gillette used its market power and this brilliant “Goodwill” marketing strategy, to protect its revenues/shareholders.  Given this backstory, this particular razor represents so much more than “a good shave.”  Anyone trying to craft legislation (if anyone actually is anymore) should know and carefully consider the history of the Gillette “Goodwill” razor.  Truly, commerce is warfare, with less bloodshed.

Happy Shaves.....

SOTD TUESDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 23, 2021

SWMBO and her fragrance allergy left for the morning freeing me up to use Old Spice to complete my shave. I'm ignoring the white blanket covering my property, and continuing to pray for warmer temperatures, although 36°F is not quite as warm as I’d like. My mug shave this morning was ok. I selected my only modern artisan razor, the Riga Razor 7/8. The shave was perfectly adequate, but this razor has always felt clunky and awkward in hand to me. I’m probably going to sell it. It’s just not for me. I’ve had my eye on a maker based in Colorado whose razors are elegantly designed, but rather pricey! I may reward myself after my second Covid vaccination in early March. The dome shave was superb and featured my Gillette Big Fellow which dates from the second year of production (1920). This 101 year old razor always delivers the goods. Just another great dome shave in the books. I feel clean, refreshed, and porcelain smooth.

RAZOR: Riga Razor 7/8 (Mug), Gillette Big Fellow [1920] (Dome)
BLADE: Feather DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Alpha Shaving T-400 Tribute with 24mm Hybrid Knot Ferrule
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by a rinse withHumphreys Lilac WH. Finished with Old Spice Original (Indian Version)

Hi Garrett...that’s a pretty cool piece of pottery, who made that? Anything with a lid always catches my attention! That brush is stunning too!

I don't have any idea who made it.  I found this pair at my local Goodwill and grabbed them.  They have some Chinese characters on the bottom.  I'm guessing that's a signature of some sort.
