Stubble: 12 hrs.
Pre: Hot Water Splash
Soap: Rockwell Shaving Cream
Brush: Zenith boar
Bowl: N.A.
Razor: Timeless SS .68
Blade: Personna Med Prep (8)
Post: B&M Seville AS
Result: DFS

After five months on this journey, and several rampant and simultaneous acquisition disorders, I went back this morning to my first high-end razor and shaving cream.  I hoped to get a sense of how my perspective has shifted.  I realized on a whole new level what an amazing razor the Timeless SS .68 is.  It feels mild and super smooth but results in a great shave.  The thing is, it’s such a pleasure to use this razor.  It is so finely crafted and has such an elegant design.  At the same time, the blade is securely clamped along its entire length and close to the cutting edges.  The razor feels so highly refined and looks so beautiful, the experience is one of luxury.  At the same time, Timeless razors are readily available at relatively reasonably prices, compared to the premium offerings in today’s market.  The scalloped cap looks retro (it brings to mind the look of a Duesenberg Model J from the ‘30’s) and is also functional.  What a great tool.  The Personna Med Prep is going strong and the RR cream provided a good base that was easy to lather.  The scent also seems retro to me, but in a pleasant way.  The Zenith was definitely overkill with this cream and with just 12 hours of stubble.  I picked it strictly out of whimsy.  That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.  Happy shaves to all.

RAZOR: Cobra Art Damascus 6/8 Koa Wood Scale (Mug), AS-D2 (Dome)
BLADE: Kai DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Rabid Banana Preshave Cube
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat w/ 6 drops of M-Bomb
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH and Osage Rub. Finished with Mentholated Mysterium Serum and Krampert’s Frostbite.

Another good shave! I really believe at this point that there’s something to the healing effects of lanolin. On pass three (XTG) of the mug shave SWMBO came waltzing in leading me to pause my stroke momentarily. I felt what I thought was a pinch, put down the razor to take a look thinking I might have a cut. All I saw was a very slight red line. I pulled on the side, but no cut despite it initially feeling like one. Well back to finishing the pass for a very close DFS+++. After my regular wash with the MWF brush squeezings, which I leave on during shave cleanup, I discovered after rinsinsing clean that I could not find where I thought I’d cut myself. Go figure!

My friend, Jim (jluc) mentioned yesterday that Kai blades were very slightly wider than the Feather blades I usually use in my AS-D2. Since he had just acquired an AS-D2, he mentioned he was going to give the Kai a run. So for the Dome shave today, I unloaded my Feather blade and loaded a Kai. With the Kai I did hear a very slight ‘buttering toast’ song from the blade, but that was with the hearing aids cranked all the way up. The regular two pass (WTG, ATG) noggin shave seemed comparable to the shave with the Feather, and the result was no different. The baby was put to bed (VBBS), leaving your happy narrator - cool, clean and definitely velveteen!

Mix'n'Match Milksteak:

Brush: Dogwood Handcrafts B9A 28mm
Razor: Gillette English Aristocrat Jr.
Blade: Gillette 7'clock (5)
Lather: Declaration Grooming Dayman
Post Shave: Declaration Grooming Trismegistus
Frag: Zoologist Panda Extrait de Parfum

Mixed it all up today for a lovely shave. The soap scent is on the lighter side and smells nice while shaving but doesn't linger around too much longer. I don't have the AS so Tris stepped in nicely. Panda pairs alright with Tris - there's nothing much to clash here as both scents are not overpowering. I'm enjoying panda a little less than I remember from the first time - the initial spray is nice with that bright apple note but it dies down rather quickly to Jasmine and sandalwood notes. Still a very nice scent.

Return to the English AJ was good. I switched to the 7 o'clock blade here for a comparison to the US-AJ and I found this razor noticeably more efficient - I could have ended at 2 passes today. It is a very smooth razor and while there was more blade feel, I didn't experience any nicks or discomfort. I also find the areas where I tend to have some stubble left over in other shaves, there's less or none today. Overall, I think my preference is for those milder Tech type shaves but I think I need to practice with these razors more - the shave is closer to BBS and that feels friggen great.
