Just wondering if anyone uses a single soap that they love, but mix up the scents using aftershaves or other fragrances after the actual shave.

It’s been something I’ve considered implementing in my shaves by finding a great unscented base and using aftershaves that suit my fancy for the day. I just wondered if anyone already functions like this and what your experience has been like. For example, is the missing scent from the shave that big a deal?

I'm almost with you. I use 5-6 soaps and like 20 aftershaves. Soap scents don't mean a lot to me since I shower after shaving and it just washes off. I still enjoy good smelling soaps but don't really buy based on scent. I'll lean towards the classics like MWF, Tabac, Haslinger, etc. because there always available and dependable. I still want to try the "latest and greatest" once in a while but have not yet had more than one scent per artisan and will likely never lose sleep waiting for the next hyped up soap drop that's probably only available for 10 minutes then the formula gets changed. (That's a whole 'nother can of worms). But yes, I feel you.

I have only three soaps with a matching aftershave.
  • Proraso Red
  • Italian Barber Amici
  • I could include Stirling's "Sharp Dressed Man" soap and Italian Barber's "GIT" aftershave, because they are both supposed to be based on Creed's "Green Irish Tweed" scent.
With those soaps I'll always use the corresponding aftershave. Even so, I'll use the aftershaves with other soaps maybe half the time. I regard the soap's scent just as something to enjoy while shaving and the aftershave or cologne is for the next couple of hours.
I find that Proraso Blue balm is rather neutral, so I'll spritz on a bit of cologne (don't care which scent) over it.

Oh wait — I do also have a Captain's Choice Bay Rum soap and some Clubman Virgin Island Bay Rum aftershave, which are fairly close, but I plan to PIF them as soon as I can trick somebody into accepting them. I cannot stand Bay Rum, but I received them both in a larger PIF.

While I could see that working, I like my various scented soaps along with an aftershave that is usually, but not always, unscented and the eau de toilette that I feel like using that particular day. Because scents from shaving soaps don't last on me once I rinse my face I don't worry about my eau de toilettes not working with them. However, I do enjoy the scent of the soap as I am shaving.

I usually use a soap with a matching AS. However, if I use MWF or Haslinger, I will pair that with one of the Avon AS that I have.
