Scratching an itch..Wolfman WR2

Thank you for your reply, good sir! My Wolfman experience has been storied. I started with WR2 1.15. Back then, I was really enjoying blade feel. After much experimenting with shims, I next ordered a 1.30. It was too much, and so I tried a 1.25. The last is the only one I have left. Most unexpectedly, I've lately strongly favored milder razors--hence my regular use of Timeless Ti 0.68 SB. I think I'm willing to try Wolfman one last time, if I can find a milder WR2 to my liking. I tried a WR1 0.67; aggressiveness was acceptable, but I didn't enjoy the head geometry as well. Recently I was able to borrow and try a WR2 0.95 from a friend. It was an open comb, and a bit too aggressive. Today I emailed Tara at Wolfman Razors to see where I'm at on the list and see if she can provide the blade exposures for WR2 0.95, 0.85 and 0.75, as I've heard they make these gaps.

Nowadays it seems James will make whatever gap you ask for. Back years ago ... it seems to me ... a 0.61 was standard on the WR-1, and 0.74 was 'aggressive.' Or at least more so.

For me I found the 0.61 too mild, and went 0.74. Since I've gone 0.80, 0.86, 0.94 (WR-1) and I think the 0.74 is my favorite of the bunch.

In WR-2 it has been 1.15 OC/1.25 SB in a DC, along with a 1.25 OC, a 1.35 Ti SB, and a 1.55SB. I also have a BBS-1, which is essentially a WR-2 with a 1.00 gap. I like 'em all, and if I had to pick one it would be the 1.35. 

For comparisons sake, I had a Feather AS-D2  and couldn't sell it fast enough, a Timeless 0.68 that also went on the block because it just wasn't efficient enough for me. A Blackbird, SB or OC, SS or Ti is a fine shaver for me. Charcoal Goods Lvl 2, and especially Lvl 3 also. (the old production)

Just wanted to give a quick update on my Wolfman Wr2 Ti 0.95

Sad days, as despite my initial thoughts on the razor and gap being great for my skin type, truth be told that I am finding it a bit aggressive.
The first few shaves were great but it quickly became apparent that the razor does not suit me as a daily shaver. I have tried various blades but I have to face facts that this blade gap is just not for me.As I have gotten older my skin seems to be under a transformation whereby I am preferring milder, non aggressive razors. I have to shave everyday for my work but come 5 O’clock I don’t care if I can feel stubble so all day shaving smoothness not a huge priority if it leaves my face sensitive.

I highly recommend the Wolfman as the design, build and quality is right up there with the very best you could find. The polish was exceptional and the Ti suits the Wr2 well in my opinion. If you are lucky enough to have had a razor from James you will know just how good his razors are.

I will be selling this razor unfortunately and hoping to break even more or less on what I paid, i am not going to sell for ridiculous money or hold out for better offers.
My name is already on the list for a Wolfman Wr1 with 0.48 gap and any money made will be going straight back to James such is my perception on the quality of his products.

Just wanted to share and be truthful about my experience.

If I hadn’t had the chance to try it, that itch would still be there and unscratched.

Interesting comment. I often wonder why there seem only to be highly positive reviews of the Wolfman WR2 out there. Not because I think it’s a bad razor, but because the WR2 has such an unusual design which, at least for me, required a very specific way of using it to get the smoothness everybody talks about. I find it hard to believe so many buyers all figured out naturally how to get a smooth shave from the WR2 and never had any problems.

Using the WR2 the way I would normally shave it felt pretty rough and very bladey to me, and not as efficient as I expected. I only got a smooth feeling shave by shaving at an extremely steep angle and with an ultra-light touch (and if you shave like that won’t every razor feel smooth?). Even then, while I get comfortable and close shaves, the shaves aren’t as long-lasting as some other razors (I have the 1.35mm gap). One other (more minor) point nobody mentions is that Kai blades don’t fit the WR2 because of the corner post design - it’s a pity because Kai are my preferred blades. Everybody seems to rave about the smoothness and efficiency of the WR2, but I suspect it tells us something that people are also asking for more and more extreme gaps - almost a full millimeter more than the standard spec - to increase the efficiency.

The Wolfman WR1 is a much more conventional design, and a razor that everybody should be able to get along with. I feel the WR2 requires adjustments to your shaving technique before you can get the best out of it. Is it only me? I actually like and enjoy the WR2 now, and I’d like to try a 1.55 gap to see if it is efficient enough to impress me, but I still feel as though I am having to change my shaving style a lot to compensate for a flawed design, rather than this being a mindless, natural razor to shave with.

Maybe I’m mad.

Great comments. I'm on the Wolfman list and have been thinking about the WR2 with a 1.25 gap. Currently using a Timeless 0.95 SB and find it very close to my perfect razor, but I can't satisfy the itch for a Wolfman. When I sum everything I can find comparing the Timeless I am using and the WR2 1.25 I am considering, they seem to compare nicely for smoothness with the WR2 slightly more aggressive. Just for comparison, I have a Charcoal level 3 which gives me a shave comparable to my Timeless, but tricky to use and leaves me with razor burn. I'll cry like a baby if I find I've ordered the wrong Wolfman blade gap.

I also have  Timeless .95 SB and am on the waitlist since end of May..Hours of reading comments have me leaning to the 1.25 SB... I'm hoping that I make the correct educated guess ...and that's all it really is..Tried the Blackbird found it to be blade specific and rough but at least I could return it which I did.  Hard to beat my Timeless  but willing to take a chance

Bronxboy, you are a month or so ahead of me on the list. When you get your 1.25 SB I'd love to hear how you like it. Seems we are moving in the same direction looking for the perfect razor.
