To preface my review, I have no connection, personal or otherwise, with Copper Hat. I am a traditional wet shaver in search of good shaving soaps, preferably unscented soaps.

I have been in a buying and experimenting phase with shaving soaps and creams. I ordered the unscented soap and have used it several times. The owners (Kate and Brad) are a husband and wife team. Their shop is located in Victoria, British Columbia.

The soap comes in a screw top aluminum tin. Its appearance is a white, fairly hard soap.

Ease of lathering: (10/10)
I have done several lather tests with this soap and in every instance it produced a great lather. I have tried with hard, medium and soft brushes (boar and badger) and in every case it was very easy to load the brush. After a minute of swirling the brush I had a full brush. I have soft water, so your YMMV depending on your water hardness. I am generally a face latherer. I also tried this soap on my palm with different brushes. I did not try bowl lathering. The lather was reasonably thick and creamy. I would not call it a thirsty soap; but you can adjust the consistency to your own preference.

Life span of lather: (9/10)
The lather lasts a long time. Once applied to my face the lather showed no sign of deterioration, though after a few minutes it started drying…as would any soap. I easily had enough lather for several passes. Again, adjust your water content to achieve the right consistency that is right for you.

General skincare: (8/10)
There are several ingredients in this soap that have great moisturizing properties for my skin. I don’t have dry or sensitive skin and with this soap I do not feel the need to apply a post-shave moisturizer. But then again it is still summer. In winter I would probably moisturize with a post-shave balm.

Lubrication: (10/10)
Copper Hat Unscented soap is very slick. It reminds me of MWF in terms of its slickness. It makes it easy to get a great shave with little irritation.

Protection: (8/10)
Always a difficult thing to judge. I am not an aggressive shaver and my razors are fairly mild (Gillette Heavy Tech with Astra SP blades). While the lather is slick, it is not ultra-protective, but still, I have no complaints.

Scent: (10/10)
Absolutely no scent. And this is important because some soaps that are advertised as unscented still have a scent of some kind, either from a masking agent or a tallow or lanolin kind of earthy smell. But this one is superior in terms of it being completely unscented. For those shavers who are scent sensitive this is a great soap to use.

Price: (9/10)
At $14.00 CAD for a 75 gram tin. For me this is good value. The tin is recyclable and reusable.

Would you buy again: (9/10)
Absolutely. In fact Copper Hat makes several other soaps: Coastal Fair, Twisted Lime, Shaved Ice, Island Hopper, Lumberjack in addition to Unscented. If I wasn’t sensitive to scents I would try their other soaps. I would not hesitate to buy the unscented version again.

Their website was easy to navigate (though not as well designed as other online shaving supply stores) and had no difficulties with ordering and shipping. They are also quick to answer their e-mails for general inquiries about their products.

Shaving soap ingredients:
Made with natural products. On this label they say Essential Oils. I am thinking this is a generic label for all their soaps.

Overall: (9/10)

I only have positive things to say about this soap. The packaging looks great and it is a pleasure to use and it left my face feeling great. Copper Hat Unscented is proof in the pudding that there are some very high quality artisan soaps on the market. It performs as well as, or better than, several of the higher end soaps on my shelf. This one will make it into my list of “Top 10 High Performance Soaps”.
Happy shaving!

Whenever I go to shave, I assume there’s someone else on the planet shaving, so I say “I’m gonna go shave, too.”
