Question for those who regularly use Feather AS/D2, Vintage Tech, Superspeed etc.

So those of you who use very Mild razors regularly, how would you describe your scenario?


1. You have a light beard

or

2. You are okay with a far from BBS shave

or

3. You do lots of passes (3+) and buff a lot during those passes

or

4. You have adjusted your technique in such a way that you can work with the limited shaving angle of a mild razor and get good shaves despite having a regular/coarse beard.

Interested to hear your thoughts.

I have a moderately coarse beard, and I get consistent BBS shaves with Delta Echo-treated Feather AS-D2 heads, which I attribute to using top-quality vintage tallow soaps, doing 3 passes, having good technique developed over time, and the use of the best vintage blades for me (Wilkinson Light Brigades and Personna 74 Tungstens).

Technique is where it's at for me. When I use a milder razor I pay special attention to actually removing stubble.

I'm prone to getting ingrown hairs on my neck if I chase BBS so I know where I can go atg and where I shouldn't. I almost always do two passes and touch ups with every kind of razor. I will use different blades with different razors though.

I have stiff grey old man whiskers on my face, and stiff black wires on my neck pointing all directions, but all flat against the skin. There’s an area to the left of my throat that is particularly stubborn.

I like mildish razors with very sharp blades. I’ve tried more aggressive razors. I’ve found that a sharp blade doesn’t need an aggressive razor, and an aggressive razor won’t make up (much) for a dull blade.

I mostly use Bic or Personna Red blades. Feathers are ok too, but only for one shave.

As for technique, I have found that the angle that gives the most feedback isn’t necessarily where the smoothest cutting happens. The Mamba, for example, likes riding the cap.

I haven't so much "adjusted" my technique as I have learned how to use the Tech razor correctly.  BBS is mainly a fool's errand that requires too much work and often leads to ingrown hairs & irritation. You will have to shave again tomorrow regardless so why not make today's shave enjoyable and not an overly fraught exercise in beard "elimination"?

Always remember why you decided to become a DE/SE wet shaver. Chances are great that is was NOT to get a BBS shave.  

My standard is really “date night smooth”. That said, most days I tell myself I don’t need to go for BBS, and then do it anyway. And yes, with a sharp blade and good technique, a mild razor will do it.
