This morning when I tried to sign in to a different shaving forum I just got a blank page with the message, "You have been banned from this forum. Please contact administrators if you have questions." I was unable to contact them; clicking on "Contact" or "The Team" did nothing. I finally asked a friend who is also a member there to contact them and ask for an email to me with an explanation. He forward to me a PM reply from one of their mods saying that I was NOT banned. And sure enough, just now I was able to sign in there. My suspicion is that this was due to a technical glitch stemming from my use of a VPN (for general paranoid privacy purposes, just because I don't like the idea of being tracked) and a change of the VPN server that I was using at the time. Anyway, to get to the point, I guess the technical folks here should be aware of this potential problem.

some people will block VPN access because it's a way for people who were previously banned to get around an IP ban. also, if said forum is using a reverse proxy (cloudflare, incapsula, etc.) and they don't scrutinize the IP so that it uses the user's real IP over the reverse proxy IP and they happen to ban someone, everyone with that same IP will be banned from the site.
