Pass arounds

Some thoughts on pass arounds. Razors, soaps, aftershaves and I've even seen brushes in pass arounds and I was thinking at this time with all the worry and possibilities of spreading the Coronavirus ( COVID -19 ) maybe we should give thought to possibly postponing them for a while. 

I know that most people will sanitize the gear before shipping it out to the next person but all it takes is a few that don't to increase the risks. 

Just some food for thought.

We have a post in our office from the Stanford Hospital Board. One of the things that it states is that the virus can live on a metal surface for 12 hours and for 6 to 12 hours on fabrics.. With shipping taking at least 2 days, I wouldn't be worried about it. Plus, regardless if the previous shaver said he/she disinfected the razor, I would still disinfect it using Barbasol and alcohol. In these times, I would also make sure to wash my hands thoroughly after handling the razor out of the box.

Always good to be vigilant Dragonsbeard and thanks for the post. I too see little risk and would agree that self sanitizing is a great idea. (And I slept in a Holiday Inn Express so I know stuff).

Good point Andrew as I think any trading of items at this point has its risks to it but soaps and shaving brush pass arounds are the ones that worry me the most as we all know, yes we are asked to scoop out the soap and load in a bowl. I think we all know that not everyone follows those prodeedures as much as we'd like to believe they do. Razors are not such a big issue as they can be easily sanitized and I know info is coming out on how long the virus can live on different surfaces but like I said just food for thought mostly on soap and shaving brush pass arounds but I also say to each their own on whether or not to join one.

it's definitely worth discussing..

I almost always let razors and other items I buy used from the bst/pass arounds/etc sit a few days before using them. for razors, I'll typically wash them with a mild soap and tooth brush and then spray them down with alcohol that I put in a spray bottle.

Brushes are perhaps the most problematic in my brain too.

I used to just dump out some alcohol into those 2-3oz paper bathroom cups and drop the razor base plate and top cap in it but that was wasteful of the alcohol..much easier & cheaper to just put some in a spray bottle and go that route.

After reading about that brother Andrew Gillum's exploits, I too would be wary of hotel rooms...hahahaha.

But more seriously:

For me, once I have earmarked an item (razor part or brush) for sale, I thoroughly wash/scrub/disinfect it.
After this I keep it away and never use it again.

I have some new stuff enroute to me...needless to say, I'll be handling the incoming packages with a. lot more care.
The new brush will be disinfected with a vinegar soak....other stuff will be soaked in alcohol and hot water for a solid
20 min or so.
