I remember hearing that olive oil in a soap isn't good for the lather properties. Any thoughts on this?

It's amazing in bath soap and I never make a batch without it. However, in shave soap it can be a lather killer I hear if too much is used. I hear CRSW made a good olive soap, which some here may be able to chime in about.

Really depends on the other ingredients surrounding the olive oil. It's fine to use, and very conditioning, so long as you're providing enough stearic acid and other complimentary oils to get good lathering properties.

Good point. I'm guessing most don't use it because it isn't necessary to get good conditioning when there are other oils that provide plenty of it like high oleic safflower and sunflower oils, grapeseed, avocado, and castor to name a few. Plus, the cost of olive oil is probably another deterrent. I suppose one could use the lower priced Pomace since most shave soaps are hot process and don't have to worry about the faster trace like with cold process. I know one thing though, I love it in bath soaps and assume it works just fine in shave soaps if the formula is good.

+1 here for reading many good things about Cold River Soap Works’ Oliva line of soaps, though I haven’t tried it myself.

Another brand I have heard is very good is BDS Soap.

Whenever I go to shave, I assume there’s someone else on the planet shaving, so I say “I’m gonna go shave, too.”

I have CRSW Oliva Citrus Paradisi and it lathers like a champ for me.

I have used Savon de Marseille bath soap for shaving, and it both lathered and worked well.
