Received a Varlet package today- the Cauldron. Looks and feels good. It’s been a while since I used a non-Paladin brush, so the next shave should be interesting.

This is my first Varlet. I have to say, the construction, packaging, design, website, etc. is all top notch. I can't wait to see how it performs.

Just finished my first shave with my first Varlet. It is exceptionally soft, quite possibly the softest brush I own at the moment. There's not an upside down hair in this thing. It's obvious that a lot of care and attention goes into making both the knots and the handles.

When people see a hand tied fan, I think the first comparison is to Declaration, as there are so many being used now (both DG originals and DG knots in other handles). In only one use, I can see that they perform differently. On the first pass, the Varlet released lather easier than just about any other brush I own, which was impressive given its density. Where I made a mistake was not loading it long enough. My second pass was a little short on lather. I probably loaded it as long as a DG brush, which has a much lower loft and probably generates lather more quickly. Now that I know, I will try a longer load next time I use the Varlet. So far, I am very impressed. Once I learn the subtleties, I'm sure it will get used at least as much as any other brush I own.

I only wish Varlets were more available. Someday I'd love one in carbon, especially if Aldo ever makes those in a matte finish like this one. Also, I am curious about his XD knots and his bulbs.

Once my Black Eagle brush arrives, I am going to compare four brushes of similar sizes: 28mm Black Eagle HT1, 28mm Declaration B6, 27mm Chubby 2 Manchurian, and this 29mm Varlet. What they have in common is that they are all made entirely "in house". I think that might be the biggest similarity between all of them, however. I will post a review of the four when the BE comes.

Looking forward to that comparison.

The knots on these sure look beautiful. I haven’t followed the Varlet craze and am very unfamiliar with the brand as a whole. It looks like I need to start doing some catching up!
