My two complaints about the new open comb Blackland razor..

How would you compare BB to other machined razors like Timed,  SheepBoy, DFS - 1, BTT etc.  

The only one in your lot I can speak to is the Timeless.  The Timeless and Wolfman are in my opinion different razors on the same spectrum.  Both deliver similar excellent shaves, the Timeless being a heavier razor in that class.  The Black Bird is unapologetic about its looks, love it or hate it, it just shaves really really well.  Both Blackbirds I own are the brushed finish so I don't see what the polished owners see.  I just see a very Unitarian razor that has a lot of blade feel and rewards those that takes the time to learn the tool.  I had the Rockwell, used the 6, felt similar to many razors I have and do own so I moved it on.

The proper term is utilitarian razor which is quite different from a unitarian razor.....I go back and fourth as to wether I want to see a spelling error (no auto correct) or a grammatical error (with the help of auto correct) which may include but not limited to; wrong word, wrong verb, wrong noun, totally wrong meaning....

Just wondering. Did you just become tired of the S-1 or did it not preform as expected? I'm planning on replacing my C37 and was considering the S-1.

The S1 was my first premium razor and compared to the 37c, for me it's a lot smoother. If you like smooth slants, this may be a good option for you. I've tried various razors since then, and after a while, several had eclipsed the S1 as my favorite. It's still a beautiful razor and the knurling on the ATT Atlas handle is probably the best I've ever felt. I still use mine from time to time for variety, but it's for novelty now at this point.

As slants go, the S1 is no slouch.

My apologies, I thought we were talking about a Rockwell setting! Agreed the ATT S1 was an excellent razor. I ended up moving it along because the shaves I got were similar to those I got with the R plates. I had somewhat of a love/hate with my ATTs.. absolutely beautiful to hold, the quality was there, but I had such a tough time getting a good shave. That changed for me with the the SE and Aluminum razors. The SEs had a different angle that worked well for me and the aluminum razors with the same R plate only lighter, did the trick. ATT is back in my rotation because of the new razors. Upon reflection I probably should have given the S1 a better shot, but the 3-5 slants to roll out nearly all at the same time opened the field a bit so I wasn't restricted to just one.

Glad this thread resurfaced. Was sure I had pitched in, but turns out I hadn’t.

I have the Blackbird safety bar machined finish, and the open comb black oxide. Incredible razors! I agree with Hardtop01 that if you learn one, then most likely you can just pick up the other.

My favorite of the two is the safety bar. The open comb feels just the slightest bit more aggressive, and since the safety bar version is already incredibly efficient, the added aggression of the open comb isn’t really “necessary” for me.

That being said, I can use either one just fine as a daily driver. The key to me is finding a good angle (could vary even between passes), using the lightest touch, and observing how the stubble cowers in front of (and then vanishes because of) these amazing tools.

So I'm just throwing it back out there. Still have these two razors (actually upgraded to an open comb polished version and it shaves just as well), opinion has not moved one inch, and have no intention of selling. They continue to be winners and I stick by my initial review. Blackland has done an excellent job with this razor and I added the Sabre to the stable.
