Gents,

A pal of mine asked me to use Martin De Candre to see what I thought since my lathering technique has changed so much over the last 6-8 months.

I thought to myself, “Interesting...I haven’t used MDC in forever!  See how it goes!”

So MDC preciously was cemented in my top five, and I thought very highly of it.  However, as my way of lathering has changed...I just was getting such great results with Sebum, Santa Maria Novella, Mystic Water, Long Rifle, Haslinger (tallow), vintage Brooks Brothers, etc...that MDC was essentially sold off and the two I kept (Fougere and Vetyver) sat forgotten at the bottom of a drawer.

At any rate, what an interesting little experiment. The lather was superlative, and I kept thinking that it was superior.  The next question I asked myself was, “Superior to what?”  The answer I came up with is that MDC is damn near superior to pretty much everything, and that it gets props for being old school and staying true to itself.

I guess I need to dust off the Fougere as well!

The "traditional artisans" like MdC, SV, TFC, etc. rule the roost for me too. I love reading about the new artisans, but aside from a container of B&M Le Grand Chypre that I'll always have around, I leave it to my shaving brethren to use them for the most part.

Two older gentleman are the ones who really got me into traditional shaving almost a decade ago. They are both 20+ years older than me, and they constantly rib me for being like "an old man yelling at the clouds" about not caring for the new age superfatted soaps, hahahaha. They wait with bated breath for every new soap base release, extolling the virtues of unicorn milk. I keep plodding along with the aforementioned. It's all in good fun.

I am reminded of the phrase: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". MdC is one (of a group) that fits into that category.

I had original, the only one I sold. I'm not a big lavender guy.

I liked the scent of their vetyver but it lit my face up so I had to sell it. MdC original does not do that to me.
