Much to my surprise, Maggards 26 mm Plisson knot brush has a lot more backbone than the Plisson Cade brush. Anyone know how the Maggards 26 mm Plisson knot compares to the Maggards Tuxedo one?

I used an Italian Barber "Bruce" for nigh onto a year or better and also two of the black synthetic "Game Changer" knotted brushes as well as a Tuxedo style brush, the latter for less than one month, albeit not from Maggard's. There is simply no comparison in that the Tuxedo style is far better in being softer, more backbone and retains water to boot. I sold the "Bruce" and the black synthetics are now relegated to backup brushes. As soon as it hit my cheek on the first lathering I was in hook, line & sinker.  Wink

P. S.  I also have used both the "black Fibre" & "Silvertip" Mühle brushes for even longer and they are now two generations behind. No comparison. The Tuxedo style is the best there is now, bar none.

A quick update on this particular brush, the 30mm size that is. The tips are very, very soft with very good backbone. Whipping up a lather with it is a pure joy. Soaps, creams and croaps are no problem for this brush. It holds water respectably and allows good flow through. It won't hog your lather, but there is a slight issue. Because of the decent backbone, I find that it doesn't splay as easy as the plisson style synthetics. For example, my RR Beehive has great splay and builds a face lather with the best of them. So does the F 400 XXL even though it can get messy if your not careful. Same goes for the Maggard Granite brush. They all splay well with just a bit of springiness to them. Not so much for Maggards version of a Black Tux knot. You can face lather but the brush has a bit more resistance to splaying making for a somewhat stiffer experience. Bowl lathering is a dream, but on the face it requires more force than the others and it just takes more work. Perhaps a few more uses might make it easier, but I doubt it. It's a synthetic after all. Still a great brush but wanted to give those who have been looking in acquiring it what's the skinny on it.

Synthetic black knots, i.e., "Game Changer" ones, do indeed break in somewhat. However, for face lathering the solution to this is easy: a fan shaped Tuxedo knot. They splay perfectly IMO and the one I have from TurnNShave is simply stellar to use. Best brush I have ever owned, bar none.

I've heard good things about those brushes on TurnNShave on Etsy, but unfortunately I prefer bigger knots than the ones that are offered there. As 25mm is the largest offering. Perhaps I can inquire on a custom size 28 or 30mm knot. Worst case scenario is they say no. But still, I'm quite happy and impressed by the performance and value of the Maggard 30mm Tuxedo knot. For under $20 it's a bargain.
