Larger lather bowl recommendations

I have tried several including Captains Choice in ceramic and brass. Best i have used in a 13cm diameter Sori Yanagi stainless steel bowl.  It is large enough that the later does not slop out, the texture is good for whipping up a lather without damaging the hair, and the sides are shaped so that it is practically impossible to strike the brush handle on the rim of the bowl if you are paying any attention at all.

If easy to do, would you mind posting link to this bowl - just want to make sure I am looking at the correct one.

As single bowls they are kind of pricey and typically ship from Japan so they take a while to get.  If you are in need of a set of stainless steel kitchen bowls the nesting set of five different sizes is a better value and will likely be the best set of kitchen bowls you will ever buy.

Not at all.  In fact i actually find it easier as compared to the ceramic Captains Choice as I do not load on the soap but instead scoop and smear on the bottom of the bowl. 

With the Captains Choice i used to end up with a lot of soap caught in the ridges instead of loaded in the brush unless I mashed the brush a lot more than I wanted to. 

This may be a technique issue as for years I only used T&H creams and lathered on the polished ceramic surface on the inside of the sink basin.

Impressive! Thanks for the pics. Looks great. And as you mention - soap does not get stuck in the grooves!

I use the Aesop stainless bowl. Looks like the same bowl above. Description says “The stainless steel bowl designed by Sori Yanagi”

It is a different shape than many others and works very well. Comfortable to hold. Wide rim provides plenty of room for lather with no spillage.

$25 shipped from Aesop. I’ve also seen pet food bowls that are pretty close.

I have a timless bowl and I think it is great when I bowl leather. Big enough for me

I need to upgrade to a bowl. I currently lather out of a mug.

The Captain's Choice bowls all look too shallow and too cylindrical for my methods.
So are most of the apothecary-style mugs from various brands, except they are too tall.

If you are in eastern Canada you can buy a thin-walled stainless steel (salad?) bowl from Atlantic Superstore (a division of Loblaws) for something like $4.
Failing that, Karve Shaving Co. has the exact same bowl for $20 CAD.

When I use it I have it floating in a sink full of hot rinse water. The brush and lather are kept warm by the heat from the water, so it works like a modern-style scuttle with a huge hot-water chamber. For that reason, the thin stainless steel is good, because it conducts the heat from the water to the lather.
I rinse it and dry it after each use, so I don't leave a puck in it permanently, like I would with an Old Spice mug.

The one drawback of the floating scheme is that I am restricted to using short-to medium handle lengths, because something like an Omega Pro 49 or a Rubberset 400 will capsize it, unless you position the brush such that the knot is no longer in the lather. That defeats the purpose. I have a stoneware bowl and a latte bol for the larger brushes, but ultmately I plan to get a large Moss scuttle for the heat.

It has some dimpling, but they're not that deep. I bought a second one with the intention of hammering them deeper, but have not gotten around to it yet. I also gave two more away.

The depression in the middle is a pretty good size for a Godrej Shaving Round.

About the vintage Old Spice mugs - I don't think they're ideal for the purpose. Too cylindrical. Even so, I have two of them. One is permanently loaded with MWF, and the other with Williams Mug. Both have Duncan-Hines icing container lids to keep them from drying out.

I recently acquired a Timeless lather bowl. It's some type of heavy duty plastic, but it does an excellent job. It has noticeably improved my lather. Great bowl for $14 delivered via Amazon Prime.
