Be careful in relying on the insurance...

I sent a package (gift, no BST - so less stress, it was all on me) to a friend on this board. The package was sent at the beginning of December and after 2 weeks I started pushing back. I did an inquiry. Then I did a lost package search. Finally I tried to do an insurance claim.

It was insured for $50, the base you can insure for, I believe. The form was so convoluted... It asked for detailed description of each item in the package, pictures, proof of value, etc. You couldn't just say "it's lost, check your tracking and give me my $50". Nope! You had to prove the value of each and every thing in the box (or they wouldn't give you all of the insurance? I don't know). I gave up. It was too much of a hassle for a $50 return... Maybe!

Luckily for me, the package turned up after a month on the Road (NY to GA). In 30 days, I'm pretty sure you can walk from NY to GA (@10 hours a day... Yep, you can. Thanks Google!).

I used to be of the mindset that USPS insurance was a good protection. Now I think it's just a scam. Why do I get to choose how much insurance is on it, if they are going to pay me based on the value of the items - of which I must declare in such gross detail?

We do a lot of shipping in this hobby. I hope none of you good folks ever have to deal with the insurance side of USPS. I hope I never have to again, either.

I discovered this a long time ago.  Should I ever have to insure something with USPS I take pictures of the item(s) as well as the receipt of its cost.  Even then I'm not sure I'd be able to collect.  I am usually reasonably pleased with USPS but I agree with you on insurance; it's a scam.

There are certainly issue in some US cities. I had a shipment sent from a company near Milwaukee. It was sent FedEx Ground. I live in the Chicago suburbs about 100 miles from Millwaukee. The package was picked up by the carrier and sent to their terminal in the Milwaukee area. It was loaded on a truck for transit to the Chicago area terminal. The package was never seen again. Normally shipments from Milwaukee to Chicago are delivered overnight or at least 2nd day, but not this one. The package might be in a creek somewhere between Milwaukee and Chicago. It was a pair of orthopedic shoes to fit my big feet, so it is not exactly something anyone would be likely to steel.

Another interesting thing is West Coast Shaving used to be located in Chino, CA which is east of Los Angeles. In 2016, they relocated their warehouse from the Chino to Myrtle Beach, SC on the East Coast. However, they retained their name. They indicated that the move was for the "good of their customers".

It's clear who causes 95% of the issues, doesn't even need to be named. November isn't that far away.
Informed moderates/independents will make the right decision.
