There is no all out-weighing good point for or against it. It's personal preference. I can get great shaves from those that have and those that don't. I've never experienced the waxy feel you described and MWF, since it was mentioned and is known to have it, is one of my all time top soaps.
I will say that some, not all, of the better performing soaps IMO such as MWF, Talbot, L&L, all contain lanolin and will reach for those before I reach for my B&M Glissant bases and others. Is it because of the lanolin? Maybe. As long as I enjoy the product and get a good shave then I don't care.
In the end most shavers won't even know if their soaps have it until they go looking for it and this is no different than the "Alcohol is better than witch hazel" splash argument (which it is
