This reminds me of a personal story. When I was new to wet shaving I came across a vintage GEM razor where one of the blade stops was missing. I removed the other one, popped in a blade and gave her a test run.
Even as newbie I realized this might be a recipe for disaster, so I was very careful. It took only one or two strokes to realize that those blade stops are rather important.
