I like trying new hardware more than software so as far as creams and soap I'm probably around mid 20s. I think it's because razors I know can last me a lifetime while soaps I feel like as soon as I use it I know I'm getting closer and closer to being out of it again.

I would say that the products I've tried are more than 70.

I currently own 200-250 creams and soaps totally.

You win.

Well thank you all. Looks like 10 - 40 is the norm. Makes sense over a lifetime. This has been interesting!

I am surprised “11 - 40” was the top choice. Personally, I own 72 different soaps excluding duplicates and samples. Taking top place is B&M with 13, second place goes to Chiseled Face with 8, and in third place is CRSW with 7 for a grand total of 28 — smack dab in the middle of the 11 to 40 range. Unfortunately, I have soaps from 21 different artisans. What’s even worse is I have just gotten into DE shaving for only a year (lifelong cartridge man). So my question for all of you who selected 11 - 40 as your answer: are the bulk of your soaps from only one or two artisians or do you have just a couple of soaps from numerous artisans?

Remember, the question was NOT how many tubs of soap do you own ...

It was how many different creams/soaps have you tried?

This would include samples. If you own 72 different and unique soaps, that represents maybe a $1400 - $1500 investment in one year. If this is a hobby, well $1500 is a relatively inexpensive hobby compared to what it could be. But a lot of people just "shave". They don't need anything more than a bit on variety.  I mean when are you going to finish 72 soaps? As they say in 3017?

BTW, why do they have to be from "artisans"? Some people think some "commercial" varieties are better. I would be hard pressed to think CF nm some of the Big three T creams (not all, some) are inferior to "artisans".

I was counting samples as well as 2oz, and others that are larger (Up to 8oz pucks, but I only have two of those).

The number of soaps 'tried' will always be greater than the number 'owned' assuming one at least tries all that one purchased. My point was 11-40 seems like an exceedingly low number for soaps "tried". I really thought the majority of answers would be in the hundreds. Especially considering the number of soap "brands" available - if one were to "try" a sample from each that would still place the value above 40. Couple that with the fact if one finds a brand of soap one really likes, one would presumably purchase several different soap scents of that given brand. As an example, I can't imagine a person would try just one scent from B&M and not want to try any of Will's other offerings.

As for me, it is just a hobby -- something to collect and use. Variety is the spice of life!

To be frank, I'm not surprised by the numbers. I've asked the same question elsewhere and 10 "owned" (not tried) was the sweet spot. Sure, some people have tried 200 but thats rare.

As to 40 different brands, while that is true, not all offer samples. I know where to get samples from about 75 companies. But after awhile, my experience is that if Brand A is in the same price range as Brand B, don't expect too much of a technical difference, particularly if the company is not well known. Maybe that is a bias but "for the most part" you get what you pay for. That does not always hold true.

As to trying one scent, I have learned NOT to buy samples of everything a company sells. Why? Three reasons:

1. If you don't like the scent of lavender, it's not going to smell like Roses just because your soap maker is selling it. It will still smell bad to you.

2. Whenever I read something has 8 different scents in it accompanied by a long winded description of "walking through a Spring rain in a meadow, the storm clouds are approaching and forest nymphs are dancing on mushroom heads ..." Rolleyes  it's totally lost on me. If something smells like ginger ale, then tell me it smells like ginger ale and not some long song and dance. So long winded explanations, to me, are useless.

3. Do you know everything you are allergic to and at what strengths? I don't. I discovered I was allergic to some TOBS products. If I had bought a full tub, I would have been very irritated and the excuse of "just sell it" does not go over well with me. There is the aggravation of trying to sell it, packing, money exchange, etc. Its just not worth the effort to me. To this day, I'm not sure exactly what ingredient I'm allergic to but have suspicions. But I would never buy ALL the samples from the same soap maker.

Don't forget, for many people they are trying to save money. They want the MOST number of shaves per blade and the CHEAPEST soap/cream per shave. That doesn't mean own 10 different tubs. It means own "maybe" two.

Just some thoughts.

In the past 6 years I have bought and sold at a minimum 200 soaps. My max collection was around 150.

I'm not sure how many I have now, but I have about 50 new soaps currently in transit as I haven't tried a lot of new things recently, and of course needed to re buy several things I sold. This has happened every time I sell soaps and needs to stop. My new goal is to not sell another single soap haha

I would guess I have tried close to 300???
