Hess Ezy Shave (Shavette)

Every now and then I take back the Hess Ezy Shave No. 1010 shavette, armed with Personna Hair Shaper.
The adapter also allows you to use the Personna Mini, as do Monsieur Charles and Sanguine Coolcut 9 ... without the known tightening problems.

I like the consistency of stainless steel.
The weight of 43g (of which 2g of blade) and the dimensions make it look like a 5/8 straight razor.
Balance and ergonomics are excellent, making it agile and precise.
Although it is a totally different instrument, and therefore offers different sensations.
It doesn't have that sweetness and flexibility, but it pays off with a disarming ease of use thanks to the advantages of its blades.

It is a pity that the Japanese manufacturer is no longer in business.
So Hess has been discontinuing distribution of both 1010 and 2020 models few years ago.

In fact Amazon (preferred channel) has not it, despite the good reviews received.
They are still online, but sometimes at too high a cost compared to the $25-30 that was its original target, still being an excellent product.

And It's nice in SOTDs.

I liked the Hess 1010 much better than the original Weck Sextoblade. The Weck exposed the blade a bit too much, but the Hess exposed only the cutting edge so that it was less prone to mistakes. I still have two in my rotation, but it has been getting much less use recently (along with my Feather AC type straights). I preferred the original 1010 over the 2020 as there was a batch of 2020 where it could not fit a Weck blade in it and could only use the insert for an injector blade. One modification I did early on is to convert one insert (they came with two) so it could accommodate a Feather AC blade. another thing I did was to rescale them because I didn't like the original scales too much.

Top is a 1010 with a Hess cracked ice scale loaded with a Feather AC blade
Middle is a 1010 with a Hawaiian Koa scale I modified loaded with a Weck blade
Bottom is a 2020 with a vintage tiger skin Japanese replaceable blade scale with the insert modified to take a Feather AC blade unloaded




Great razors, and like ischiapp says, it is unfortunate that production was halted a while back.

Hmm very interesting... almost glad they aren’t made anymore . I already have too many DE abs SE razors but definitely enjoy a straight shave at the barber. You guys are making me interested in jumping down this rabbit hole too. I can’t if I can’t get one . Oh well. The look gorgeous though.

The insert is basically a big piece of metal folded over a smaller downward L shaped piece of metal. I just took a jeweler's screwdriver and gently pried the areas with the arrows to loosen the back area so I could slide the insert out from the back. I then cut out a portion of the wide part (keeping the L shape intact) so it could accommodate a feather blade and then slid the piece back in and loaded a Feather blade before crimping the area I loosened. It is important to have a Feather blade loaded before crimping, otherwise you might pinch the opening too tight for the feather blade to be inserted.




try this ONLY with the 1010 inserts, as the 2020 is made of stronger metal and is harder to pry open.
