So, had a dram and I'm blown away. Much better than when I first tried it years ago - maybe my palate has matured. Full on with the peaty smokiness, but with complexity that is off the charts. Not as iodine briny as the Laphroaig (which is what I love about Laphroaig), but just so refined and well-balanced. If Laphroaig is my daily driver, the Lagavulin would be my special occasion dram...great stuff.
You can't go wrong with Lagavulin, which is the aristocracy of Islay malts. And if you are in the mood try the Distillers Edition, double matured in Pedro Ximenez casks. More mellow and friendly than the original 16 years but still peaty and incredibly sophisticated.
